Each guest room in our Los Feliz Contemporary project takes on its own character through hand-applied plaster by Kamp Studios, in tones drawn from the hillside beyond. This one pairs slate blue walls with a custom headboard in Scribe linen from Kerry Joyce’s collaboration with Heather Rosenman, its golden hue offering a warm counterpoint to the misty palette. In the en suite bath, the lunar cycle unfolds from floor to wall, with moon phases in the cement tile, half-moons in the mirrors and hammered bronze pulls, and full moons in the alabaster orb sconces.

We flipped the Kitchen of our Los Feliz Contemporary project to the opposite side of the house, closer to the hillside views and outdoor dining. An enfilade of plaster arches now connects it to the Living Room, framing a Wolfgang Tillmans photograph from our clients’ collection.

In 1919, oil heiress and arts patron Aline Barnsdall commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a house on Olive Hill in Los Feliz, the first piece of an arts community she hoped to build around it. It became Wright’s first Los Angeles commission, in a style he called California Romanza. The house takes its name from Barnsdall’s favorite flower, which Wright abstracted into a geometric motif and repeated from the roofline frieze to the furniture inside.

Wright organized the living room around the four classical elements. The fireplace supplies fire, its concrete bas-relief represents earth, and a skylight overhead brings in air. Water once ran through a moat at the hearth until Barnsdall had it drained not long after the house was complete.

R.M. Schindler, the young Austrian architect who helped see the project through, stayed on and opened his own practice. Richard Neutra soon followed, and the two helped shape California modernism. Barnsdall gave the house and grounds to the city in 1927, and in 2019 it became Los Angeles’ first World Heritage Site.

A century on, it sits a short drive from our own work in Los Feliz, a reminder of how much a single house can set in motion.

The outdoor rooms of our Los Feliz Contemporary project stretch across the canyon edge. Fire pits define lounge seating on either side of a pergola-covered dining area, built for long dinners and longer weekends.

In the primary bedroom of our Los Feliz Contemporary project, industrial materiality meets its match in alpaca. The architectural weight of a concrete and cast resin table by Draga & Aurel is a thoughtful counterpart to a sculptural lounge chair by Studio Paolo Ferrari. Both are softened by a backdrop of handspun alpaca from Lauren Hwang and a stepped suri alpaca rug by Erden underfoot.
