10 bouquets are going out tomorrow! 💐

I spent the evening harvesting and putting together 10 special bouquets for some HHS senior athletes -- and I loved getting to choose the flowers for each one.

The summer field is giving us some beautiful combinations right now: bright zinnias and sunflowers, fluffy amaranth, and soft silver shield leaves, along with other summer flowers ready to harvest this week. The cinnamon basil smells amazing.

This is one of my favorite things about growing flowers -- you get to plan a new bouquet combination every harvest. 🌸

And even though it's HOT 🔥 out there, the heat is certainly keeping the flowers busy!

I'm harvesting, planting, and getting ready for another weekend of fresh bouquets at the farm stand and Mosey Down Main Street.

🍂 A little hint of fall is sneaking into the flower field... 🌻

UPDATE 11 AM: Still plenty to choose from!

Summer is still in full swing, but this week's bouquets are starting to show some of the rich colors and textures that make late summer so beautiful.

I'm especially excited about burgundy amaranth and red broom corn joining the bouquets this week. Deep earthy reds mixed with the bright colors of summer flowers make for some gorgeous combinations.

And there are still plenty of summer favorites happening too -- zinnias, celosia, dahlias, lisianthus, sunflowers and more. My own dahlias are taking their sweet time, so I'm grateful to have some beautifully locally grown dahlias joining my bouquets this week from a friend. I love that we can support one another and keep gorgeous local flowers in our community.

This is one of my favorite times of the year on the flower farm. The seasons overlap. Summer flowers are still giving, while the first hints of fall are beginning to appear.

I had a great harvest of fresh flowers this morning and am making bouquets for the farm stand now.

Remember the Sweet William that everyone loved this spring?

Well... I'm working on bringing it back next year. And there's a little story behind it. 😊

One particular variety, 'Electron', makes the most beautiful long sturdy stems and large bright flower heads -- and I've had a surprisingly difficult time getting it to germinate the last 2 years.

I tried again. And again.

The funny thing was, I could get other varieties of Sweet William to germination just fine, but Electron wasn't cooperating. And because germination is usually something I can trace back to something I did wrong, I spent quite a while wondering what I was doing differently.

Finally, I decided to try fresh seed from a different source.

And wouldn't you know it...

There are little Electron seedlings growing! 🌱

So now they're getting their start under the grow lights before they head outside to be overwintered under low tunnels.

If all goes according to plan, they'll put on lots of growth, get the cold weather they need, and give us those beautiful bright Sweet William stems early next spring -- Maybe even in time for Mother's Day.

I love that the flowers you're enjoying right now often started as tiny seeds many months before you ever saw them.

And apparently sometimes the flower farmer has to do a little detective work along the way. 😅

I'm already looking forward to seeing Electron back in the bouquets next spring. 💕🌸

My August basement floor is looking a little.... interesting. 😂🌱

Just before I went back to school with our kids, I started working on spring flowers.

I've got trays of seedlings germinating on the basement floor because August is actually the perfect time to get certain flowers started for next spring.

My basement happens to be the only place in the house that stays close to 70° in August -- which is the temperature these little seeds need to start. Once they're growing, they'll head outside to be overwintered under the low tunnels.

Right now I'm starting some of the flowers I hope he'll recognize from this spring:

🌸 Campanula
🌿 Bupleurum
🌸 Sweet William
🌼 Feverfew
🤍 Orlaya

These flowers get established now, experience the cool weather, overwinter in the field, and then are ready to get growing as soon as spring arrives.

And honestly, I love that I get to do this.

A few months ago, I was cutting these flowers for your Mother's Day bouquets in graduation parties. Now I'm starting the next generation so I can hopefully do it all over again next spring.

Thank you for making it possible for me to keep planting, growing, experimenting, and dreaming about the next season.

Good news from the flower field! 🌸

I had a really good harvest this morning, and there will be plenty of beautiful bouquets at the farm stand on Saturday!

The summer flowers are giving us some gorgeous combinations right now -- dahlias, lisianthus, super fragrant cinnamon basil, feathery celosia, and lots of other seasonal blooms.

I spent a good part of harvesting with my clippers in one hand and deadheading with the other 😂. That's flower farming: harvest what is ready, clean up what is finished, and make room for the next wave.

And there is always a next wave.

Tomorrow I'll be back in the field staking flowers, checking on the fall specialty crops, transplanting another round of sunflowers, and seeding the last sunflowers accession of the season. It's hard to believe we're only about 55 days from our first frost!

(And somewhere out there, a certain deer bunny is feeling pretty proud of himself after eating an entire week's worth of my sunflowers. 😑😂)

But the flowers are still growing, and they are beautiful bouquets waiting for you tomorrow.

Some days on the flower farm, you just have to keep going. 🌸

This week has been a hard one. Between starting back to school as a teacher, an incredible amount of rain and bugs, and an unintended gap in my sunflower crop, I've been looking around the farm and wondering if I'll have the flowers I want for bouquets this weekend.

Some of the next sunflower plantings aren't looking anything like I'd hoped. I got behind on seeding and transplanting and some seedlings spent too long reaching for the light. The rain knocked over a few more, and the bugs... Well let's just say they're having a party in a couple of rows. 😅

I've honestly been discouraged.

Then a new customer messaged me asking for a bouquet for a friend in crisis.

I wasn't sure I had enough flowers to make it happen -- but I knew I could make one beautiful bouquet.

So I went out in the field and started harvesting.

And somewhere in the middle of putting it together, something shifted.

Look at this.

It was beautiful. There were enough flowers. And suddenly I could see a path through the next few days.

Maybe I don't have the abundance I expected right now. Maybe the sunflowers aren't cooperating. Maybe the field is muddy.

But there are still flowers.

And I think I can make enough beautiful bouquets for this weekend after all.

Sometimes the flowers remind the farmer why she keeps going. 🌸

I'm going to keep harvesting, keep arranging, and keep doing my best to share whatever beauty the field has to give.

💛 Well, you all surprised me.

Yesterday's rain did NOT stop you from coming for flowers --- and we sold out!

There was a little girl in a yellow rain coat who came by with her mom. She's a regular customer, and seeing her show up for flowers on such a rainy just about melted my heart. 💛

Rain usually makes for a pretty quiet farm stand, so I was honestly amazed and incredibly grateful to see so many of you.

Thank you for continuing to show up for these flowers, even when the weather doesn't cooperate. Every bouquet you take home helps make all the work of growing them worthwhile.

And now... Back to the muddy part of flower farming. 😂

There are puddles everywhere, the soil is soggy, and I've got stakes and netting to pull up, flowers to straighten, and a LOT of deadheading to do. All this rain has brought some beautiful growth, but it has also meant some flower loss and plenty of extra work in the field.

So I'll be out there, squishing through the mud and doing my best to keep these flowers growing straight through the rest of the summer.
