My favorite estate sale find from this weekend was this gorgeous vintage hobnail chenille dress. I did a few quick alterations and it was ready for church this morning! If y’all are sleeping on Family Ties Estate Sales and Liquidations sales, you need to wake up! This beauty cost me 3 whole dollars. 😲

One thing I will ALWAYS advocate for is teaching your kids to sew.

Even the boys.
Especially the boys!

These are the two youngest Carpenter kids.

Gideon finished his quilt at age 9. He loves Goosebumps books and wanted a quilt to cover up with while he read his favorite spooky stories.

Quin started his quilt when he was 10 and finished just last week. He collects vintage Coca-Cola memorabilia and loved his fabric choices SO much!

This wasn’t just an exercise in creative expression. The skills they developed sewing their quilts are the fundamental building blocks for careers in welding, engineering, product development, design, medical innovation and surgery, mechanics, architecture and construction. They learned how to transform a 2 dimensional thought and plan into a 3 dimensional object. They applied mathematics, ratios, fractions, pattern recognition, spatial geometry and more! They learned to take their time, focus on the details, and troubleshoot errors while still maintaining the idea of the finished product as their goal.

So…should your kid learn to sew? Absolutely!

What if they don’t like it? Well, now they have skills that they can apply to something they do like!

They’ll also know how to sew the button back on their own shirt.

And just look at those proud faces! 🥰
