The Commissary Parable of the Two Pots
In a small commissary tucked behind a row of bustling storefronts, there lived two old soup pots—one polished to a shine, the other dented from years of service. Every dawn, the cooks reached for the polished pot first, admiring its gleam. The dented pot watched quietly, never complaining, only waiting for its turn.
One morning, the head cook was running late. In the rush, he grabbed the dented pot instead. When he filled it with broth, something unexpected happened—the aroma rose richer, deeper, fuller than usual. The cooks gathered around, puzzled. The head cook tasted the soup and smiled.
“This pot,” he said, “has learned flavor the way people learn wisdom—by surviving heat.”
From that day on, the dented pot was used first. The polished pot grew jealous and asked, “Why do they choose you now? I shine brighter.”
The dented pot replied, “Shine is for the eyes. Service is for the soul.”
And so the cooks began repeating a saying that spread far beyond the commissary:
“Choose not what glitters, but what has endured the fire—there lies the true flavor.”
