We spent the week stumbling around this hole, the size of California, or maybe the universe. I decided to write a little bit about where he came from and why he meant so much to me, and to my husband, who embraced him like one of his own. You can find the story at substack.susiemiddleton.com. It was cathartic in a way to write it, as I could see and understand that Farmer was almost like a therapy dog to me. I can’t believe how lucky I was to have him. I am forever grateful for his love and companionship. (And grateful to all of you who helped take care of farmer along the way).
When he got sick, I told him every day how much we loved him. I hope he knew (I know he did) as we sure knew how much he loved us. 🐾❤️

🌸 Valley Porcupine Dahlia +++++

Like fireworks 💥 I figure we should go out with a bang, so here are 10 flowers that have been hanging around the garden the last few days.

And of course, in keeping with my pledge not to repeat, #100 is a dahlia that got lost in a back row and I only realized today that I hadn’t highlighted it. I also found another beautiful blush-apricot nasturtium (that starts out kind of a rosy tangerine color) growing amidst all the other apricot nasturtiums I planted. I don’t know what it is but hopefully will figure it out when going through seed packets. That’s the second photo, also new, so that makes up for the parkland glory repeat.

So I did in fact, manage to grow 100 different varieties (or cultivars?) of flowers this summer. Whew!

The rest of the photos are random blooms, except the last, which is a very cool clematis seedhead.

Thanks for following along and happy fall! We will have our pumpkins out on the teeny tiny farmstand for a few more days, fyi. 🎃

🌸 dahlia Hamilton Lilian

Hamilton Lilian has had a tough time of making a show this summer. Didn’t do much last year either so I think the tubers are tired! But this little one looks nice in the midst of a sea of peachy pinks.

🌸 Gitts Crazy dahlia

Almost didn’t make it to the party! first bloom of the year from Gitts Crazy - I seem to only have one plant this year, which got swallowed whole by Parkland Glory. Oh well - next year for this two-tone gal.

🌸Parkland Glory Dahlia

Running thus one by you again because it is coming in so strong. Red is not my favorite color but you’ve got to give Parkland Glory credit for being gutsy. The blooms are huge - about 8-9 inches across on the biggest and there are lots of them!
