Rodney's is hands down the bestest place one can be. Not just for forever the freshest fish, fried, stewed, smoked, steamed or raw; or massive amount of oysters to choose from everytime; or the knowledge of how to shuck which lead me buying a shucker right there; or the fun bathrooms and superb decor; or learning how atlantic and pacific oysters are so different and I actually love the flatbacks; or the longterm patrons and the fun teams and the overwhelming welcomingness and smiles... well its all of those things! It's just pure joy and a privilege to be here, every time. If you haven't, definitely give Rodney's a go. 🤙🦐🐟🦑

Pan fried wild battered smelts were just what the doctor ordered. Easy peasy flour herb batter, panfried 2- 3 min per side. Yumm with some veggies and potato makes it a complete meal. Weekend dinner easily in 30min. When the fish is fresh this is how we do it😋😋🐟🐟

Summer = beers and eats on the patio. Our local bars often have German brews (one of the best!), and pair so well with sausages or pretzels (the bestest!) Needless to say pretzels go so well with beer. Something about the salty chewy ness of a warm pretzel, is just such a treat. well today I'm doing it, so you see, you can do it at home fairly easily.

As summer inching closer in my lovely city, one of the things that absolutely heightens the summer love is good Jamaican food. I used to travel to Jamaica to escape the horrible Canadian winters annually (a few years in a roll now), the music, the food, and the slower pace just takes me away to a different mental place. Good authentic Jamaican food may be hard to find, which is why I rely on good word-of-mouth recommendations and I know I'll be getting top notch finger licking goodness. today I'm going to tell you about.. Chris Jerk. But promise me not to tell too many people, this place gets so busy as is.

Pre-pandemic, birthday celebration dinners were one of my favorite things. You know, you get to have something you don't normally order, something a bit fanciers. During pandemic, though I have been slowly perfecting my cooking, the normal dinner fare was just not going to cut it. I guess the grocery gods (is that a thing?) heard me and I was able to score fresh halibut filet in my local grocery fish counter. Ok now this is a no brainer, I know what I'll have for my birthday. My all-time favorite pub fair: the holy grail of fish and chips with halibut!

Today I'm making fusion food: chive (from my Chinese roots) egg (awesome additions to any dish) burrito (hello, leftover pita). Chive is such a strong flavored vegetable. It's peppery, sharp, spicy, dark green, and delicious. Because the leaves are so thin, it's kind of impossible to stir-fry, or blanche, or grill without the thing falling apart. What it is really good for, is as a filling. Mm-mmm!

One of the standing topics with mom on our weekly call is always about food. In fact, we dedicate about half an hour strictly to food. She would describe what she made and inspire me to try new dishes. I’d like to think the favor is returned, when I tell her all the cool things I made she might try them too. This week we were talking about corn meal cakes – she does a steamed version where as I changed it to a baked version. Both yum! And let me tell you, if all chit-chats are this delicious, I’d never stop chit-chatting.

Every holiday is made more complete with crispy Bacalhau (cod fish) cakes. These were often served on holidays as an appetizer, before the turkey and fish feast. These are deep fried. We'll just hit "silence" on my waistline's weak objections here. The good news is this recipe is not at all complicated. In fact, any weekend is a good time to take on this project, as long you have about an hour or so. Read on my friend, I’ll even share some tricks and secrets that were not written in the book with you. Ready for fish cakes? I know I am.

Roasted chestnuts just scream "holiday"! There's even a Christmas song that starts with "chestnuts roasting on an open fire", isn't there? Where I used to live, there were street vendors who would roast them and sell them fresh. Unfortunately, street vendors are not typically found here in a North America city, even those with the most elaborate Chinatowns. But what to do if we are craving chestnuts? By "we", I mean "I". No matter, we can roast these ourselves can't we? This week, I bought some raw chestnuts and I'm determined to make this festive snack.

Roasted chestnuts warms your hand, tummy, and heart. It's a delicious treat and you can make it easily at home with these instructions.

You probably tried instant noodles, if you went away for school, lived alone by yourself, ever was/is on student loan, not living with mom, ever had to cook for yourself, travel to an Asian country, know someone from an Asian country, was feeling lazy one weeknight and only had one mouth to feed, needed a quick snack... oh the list goes on. I personally suspect, that 90 % of the world’s population has had instant noodle, aka ramen, at one point or another. As a grown up (somedays feels less so than others), I still crave the salty soupy deliciousness from time to time. As a person of Asian background, ramen noodles are literally a stable that can always be found in my pantry and will forever be the fastest, yet satisfying meal. Ready for some warm noodles with me tonight?
