Over 260,000 of you watched our reel on our visit to Bunny Mellon’s Oak Spring Estate, so we wanted you to get to know us a little better :)
My mother Barbara and I founded IDLE HOUR out of true love for spaces that felt intentional, where every object invites a conversation.
I grew up spending summer holidays on Martha’s Vineyard, an island that has always represented family, nostalgia and a slower way of living.
A few years ago, we had the opportunity to purchase a beautiful cottage. My mother always taught me to admire details, such as the weave in a delicate fabric, the graceful curves on an antique commode, the patina on a sturdy pair of silver candlesticks.
We absolutely love to spend hours pouring over design books, looking through auctions and finding a treasure somewhere unexpected, so when it came to decorating, we knew the house had to be teaming with authentic and story-filled pieces. Almost everything in the house is vintage and antique, sourced from our travels or curated with a specific memory in mind.
This hunt has evolved into IDLE HOUR.
I left my career as an investment banker in London and my mother retired from her award-winning branding agency to pursue this dream.
From our 6,000-square-foot Connecticut showroom and warehouse, we procure furniture, lighting, artwork, silver, ceramics, mirrors and objects for entertaining.
The name IDLE HOUR reflects our philosophy of luxury: moments set aside for family, friends, or one’s own quiet company. We believe the best interiors are layered for these moments, shaped by pieces thoughtfully collected, and expressive of the people who live within them.
To me, IDLE HOUR is less of a business and more a way of life. We do not buy anything we wouldn’t want in our own homes and it is a sincere pleasure to share our creative vision with you.
I am so looking forward to welcoming you to the warehouse this fall!
Warmly,
Alexandra – Co-Founder IDLE HOUR
