Someone recently asked me what my studio is like.

The truth is, my favorite creative moments don't always happen there.

Sometimes they happen over iced coffee.

Sometimes during a meeting while I'm doodling in the margins.

Sometimes while I'm walking around carrying a giant tote bag full of things I probably don't need.

And sometimes they happen when I look down at the paper covering my desk and realize the drips, scribbles, paint smudges, and accidental marks have become something worth saving.

For years I thought creativity lived in the studio.

Now I think it lives in paying attention.

I've spent 20 years making art for a living, and one of the most important things I've learned is that inspiration rarely arrives on schedule. It shows up in the middle of life.

So I carry markers. I carry notebooks. I pay attention.

And when something catches my eye, I follow it.

These photos are a little glimpse into that process.

The art.
The mess.
The coffee.
The walking.
The making.

Just life, really.

Me and My Dad (and the Knicks)

When I was a little girl, my dad owned a restaurant in NYC called Damon’s, right around the corner from Madison Square Garden.

My dad was a Knicks fan, so I was a Knicks fan.

Back in the '70s, Knicks players would come into the restaurant - Walt Frazier, Dave DeBusschere, and so many of the greats. My dad would take me to games, and sometimes he even brought me down onto the court before tip-off. I remember throwing a basketball around with the players and feeling like the luckiest kid in New York.

I can still remember the smell of popcorn and soda in the Garden, the bright lights, the blue and orange everywhere, and the excitement of being there with my dad.

Looking back, it wasn’t really about basketball. It was about him. It was about sharing something he loved and letting me be a part of it.

Every time I see Knicks blue and orange, I’m transported back to those nights - to my dad, the Garden, and a little girl who thought anything was possible.

Some memories never leave you.
