Consider this your official permission slip. The good china isn’t just for Thanksgiving, the wallpaper isn’t “too much,” and that dining chair you keep saving to your cart? It’s calling you by name. You’re the occasion. Act accordingly. ✨

Colonial goes Contemporary is officially complete.

We sent off the goodbye packet this week, and it sent me right back to where this started: a Naperville Colonial full of good bones and a long list of questions about why it wasn't functioning.

What they said at the end is the part I keep coming back to. They look around their kitchen and finally feel at ease.

That's the whole job, really. Not the stone, not the millwork, not the hundred small decisions nobody will ever notice. Just a house that lets you exhale when you walk into it.

A few favorite moments from the way through and where we started ✨🤍

There’s something about these combinations that feels both grounded and alive perfect for historic homes that want warmth without going predictable. Swipe through for a few that are living rent-free in my mind, and the rooms I’d design them for →

Plum + Olive: The home office for the woman running the boardroom and the household. Grounded, vibrant and soft

Indigo + Walnut: for the music room library where you can unplug and just listen to vinyl. Deep, warm, a little moody in the best way, a space built for slowing down.

Citron + crimson: for guest room bedding, a pop of color and softness to make your guests feel happy and on vacation.

Sage + Terracotta: for the laundry room that makes doing laundry a little more fun. Warm, earthy, and just enough personality to make the least glamorous chore feel a little more like you.

Dusty blue + oxblood: for the dining room, bringing drama that’s whimsical and unexpected without tipping into moody and dark.

Ever wonder what's behind the name? It starts three generations back, with my grandfather's Terracotta pottery business in Mexico. This is part one of a three part series on why we're called Terracotta Interiors.

Next up: learning the design ropes from my mom at Potteryland, and falling in love with helping clients see what they couldn't picture themselves. Follow along for the rest of the story.

This family didn’t need more furniture. They needed a room that finally worked for them.

The sectional faced away from the light. The fireplace sat quietly on the wall, doing all the work with none of the credit. The space wasn’t broken, it just wasn’t finished telling its story.

So we flipped the whole footprint. We let the fireplace and built-in become the heart of the room. We opened up the window and let the light do what light does. And instead of one big couch trying to hold everyone, we built two seating areas, room enough for a real conversation, a game of checkers, a quiet Sunday.

Swipe through and watch this room finally exhale

Slowing down the process to spend a little more time with the details that we love.

At Colonial Goes Contemporary, the hardware and finish palette gave us another opportunity to balance the home’s classic foundation with contemporary warmth. Once installed, these details quietly settle into the home, but throughout the design process, they receive our full attention. They may not become the focal point, but their presence is felt in the way the home is experienced every day.
