Part of homesteading is staying in shape. Walking and running every day gives us the stamina we need to physically work. Pulling weeds, hauling wood chips, digging, planting, being in the hot or cold weather. It helps us to know what we are capable of so we don’t make excuses.

Growing our own meat has proven to be a challenge for our family. Having a tiny farm on 1 acre means space is complicated. We rotate our animals across our entire property. Being disconnected from our food our entire lives is another problem. How are you reconnecting with your food?

“Garden tools” come in all shapes and sizes. The harvest knife just wasn’t cutting these monster stalks. Filderkraut “FIL-der-krowt” is an heirloom variety of Cabbage from Southern Germany. Famous for its extra sweet flavor and tender leaves. I’ve found it to be forgiving. If you don’t get the soil right or have a heavy pest load, she still produces a good size cabbage head.
