The Fossil Lab partners James Hanna and Jonathan Hoag recently uncovered a new species, and genus of carpoid that was previously unknown to science at Penn Dixie Fossil Park & Nature Reserve. Read more about our fantastic find in this article from the Buffalo News!

James Hanna and Jonathan Hoag have been picking up rocks at Penn Dixie Fossil Park and Nature Reserve in Hamburg since they were kids. And now, in their 20s, they have found two rare fossils of an animal that had never been found here.

This an enrolled Eldredgeops rana collected from a location on Smoke Creek near Hamburg, NY and prepared here at The Fossil Lab. It measures 23mm across and has demonstrates a highly rare "camouflage" preservation that includes evidence of the original markings these trilobites had in life. This a semi-enrolled Eldredgeops rana collected from the Penn Dixie site in Hamburg, NY and prepared here at The Fossil Lab. It measures 32mm from glabella to where it tucks under itself. This bug has an exciting prep that shows the ventral side of the glabella. The right eye has been crushed, but the lenses remain. Very good deal for a very neat prep!
