Today as part of AIANH’s Education Day at Philips Exeter Academy, we toured the Class of 1945 Library designed by Louis Kahn and completed in 1971. We have visited before to walk the exterior, but today to also experience the building from the interior was inspiring. The concrete, brick, stone and glass are layered and connected together in a cohesive way that shows appreciation for what each material can and should do. The large scale of the central atrium is unique with the huge concrete portals, and also views into each floor of the structure and the materials beyond. Small details are well executed and many enhance the function of the library for the students. See the photo of the study books and operable interior window shutters.
We are fortunate to have this incredible building here in New Hampshire, designed by arguably one of the most talented architects that ever lived. The academy tightly controls visitors, but anyone who is able to attend a tour will be able to see how thoughtful design can enhance spaces and human experience

Wellness has become a word we see a lot lately, particularly when it comes to thinking about how we want to live. Recently we have been experimenting with Sauna as a personal ritual. Winter can be a perfect time to find relief from the extreme cold and even embrace it as a therapy alongside intense heat. We have been using our Tent Sauna as a bridge to plans we are developing for a permanent Sauna on our property. This experience of being in temperatures of 190 degrees has helped inform us on the routine of Sauna, that we’ve been passing along to our clients currently in the midst of their Sauna designs. It’s exciting to find something that is enjoyable and beneficial on many levels.
