Our Windsor School District is heading for some serious financial trouble. Don’t be fooled by what you might hear to the contrary. The most recent attached financial projections produced by the Windsor School Districts Administration estimates that THIS year we are projected to be upside down financially over $ 1.1 million dollars, the following year we will be upside down over $ 2.7 million and in the year after that, we are projected to be over $3.8 million dollars short of our expenses.
Without new School Board Members to take a new and fresh look at increasing our revenue sources and eliminating unnecessary wasted expenses, our School District will be upside down financially AGAIN and cuts to teachers, classified staff and other essential programs will certainly be on the table for consideration to be reduced or eliminated, a terrible option.
There is an obvious unnecessary expense that I would like to cut immediately. I’d like to let you all know about a proposal I made recently at two forums for our Classified Employees and Teachers Associations.
I don’t think that the School Board Members should be receiving Health, Dental and Vision benefits for being on the Board. I’ll bet your just like me and didn’t know that four out of five of the current School Board Members have elected to take those benefits costing the kids of our School District nearing about $100,000 per year, more if all five elected to. That money surely could pay for much needed additional aides or teachers, or a variety of other needs.
At every School Board meeting the one thing you often hear is “We can’t afford it”. I feel that the School Board should lead by example and forgo these tax-free lavish benefits immediately and save that money for the kids benefit. When I mentioned this at the forum, I was not surprised, I didn’t hear our incumbents offering to give up their lucrative benefits. I hope upon reflection, they will immediately publicly guarantee that they will not take any more costly benefits.
Let’s bring back the “Service” part in public service. We can do better for our kids. Leaving almost $100,000 per year of the kids money in the budget is a great first step.
