Wanna take a risk? Color drenching has been a hot topic for a while and it still comes up in almost every design conversation. The concept is simple but bold. One color wrapping the entire room, walls, trim, and ceiling all in one. After years of neutral tones it makes sense that people are craving something more personal and color drenching delivers exactly that without the stress of figuring out contrasting schemes. Warm earthy tones, moody hues, and soft greiges are leading the trend right now. And if committing to one single color feels like too much, a subtle variation on the trims, moulding, and doors is a great middle ground. The cold season is creeping in again and so is the search for the perfect mudroom. Mudrooms have been around for a while and in New England they're practically a necessity. Most people want the basics, somewhere to store outdoor wear, shoes, and gear. But more recently clients have really started thinking about the architectural potential of the space. Built-in millwork for mudrooms has been a rarity but it's picking up. Full spatial use, vertical grids, drawers, and thoughtful storage that actually hides the day's clutter rather than just containing it. The trend is leaning toward that minimal, considered look and if that resonates, a complete top-to-bottom built-in design with closets, drawers, and multi-use storage units is worth thinking about for your next mudroom project.

Trendy and classic all at once, the earthy checkerboard marble tile is making a comeback and it's showing up most in the primary bath. Moving away from traditional bold contrasts, there's a subtle shift toward softer, earthier color palettes that feel contemporary without losing that timeless quality. Who says you can't have a luxurious laundry room? It's probably one of the most used rooms in the house after the kitchen and living room, especially with a growing family. We know laundry is a chore and the whole act of it is pretty utilitarian, so why not give it some life and a little mental calm while you're at it. Dark botanical prints are picking up in style, complementing low-lumen lighting that creates an immersive, high-end feel. The chore itself can be stressful, but a little moody calm goes a long way in resetting the mind and the mood.

Feeling pretty validated right now. For the longest time, quartzite natural stone slab with soft veining has been a personal favorite for backsplashes and countertops, and for good reason. The organic look and durability alone make it worth it, but paired with warm, soft cream neutrals, it creates something genuinely beautiful that complements almost any color palette, whether it is a kitchen or a living room. Looking at you, Taj Mahal.

The home in Upton opted for exactly that, and even though it's still in the build phase, the vision alone already looks incredibly luxurious without even trying. Can't wait to see it all come together. It's slowly rising in popularity in the suburbs, and honestly, I feel like one of those people who gets to say they knew it first.

When consulting with clients on kitchen cabinetry, the majority has always leaned toward traditional beveled shaker style in warm neutral whites. But there is a shift in the winds. A movement around a different theme is emerging, called minimal with warm. Flat-panel slab wood cabinets with matte finishes let the wood speak for itself, and to balance that modern edge, warm stain colors like natural walnut and pecan soften the coldness you might otherwise feel. Not entirely new, but an interesting shift because of how contemporary and Euro-esque it feels.

The real advantage of this direction is how much it elevates the craftsmanship of the cabinetry itself, less of a facade of pretty storage and more of an intentional design statement. A matte finish also has its practical side, far better at hiding scratches and dust compared to high gloss or satin. And if the flat panel style still feels too sterile even with a warm wood stain, mixing traditional and modern elements is always a viable path. At the end of the day, it comes down to what you envision for your space, but if you're unsure how you want it to look and function, talking with an interior designer is never a bad idea.

There is something genuinely mystical and magical about this kitchen and how the bold contrasting colors never feel like too much. The Bertazzoni range in Arancio paired with a matching statement hood brings this warm vibrant orange that shifts toward a reddish hue depending on the light throughout the day. The deep Kensington Blue cabinetry and Blue Shimmer full wall backsplash play off the creamy white quartz in a way that pops without ever feeling heavy. If you have been looking for proof that bold and balanced can live in the same room, this is it.

Hey~ It's time to celebrate!

BB&R Design-Build and Jane Barnes Interiors have won the GOLD award for our Northborough, MA project in the Residential Addition under $250,000 category!

Before, the lighting in this open space felt underwhelming and honestly a little out of scale. The dining area didn't have the warmth or balance it needed, and the room felt dimmer than it should have.

Our approach centered around a Picnic in Nature concept, inspired by the clients’ existing picnic-style dining table. It was already a strong anchor, but with the original bench seating, the area leaned a little too outdoorsy and utilitarian. To soften the room, we replaced the benches with plush, comfortable chairs in deeper nature-inspired tones, similar to the quiet shadows you see in the woods. That added contrast, comfort, and gave the table a more elevated presence.

To bring the dining area to life, we introduced a sculptural chandelier with lily-shaped glass that feels like spring blooms caught mid-air. It creates a soft focal point while casting a warm, gentle glow over the table, making the whole area feel more gathered and inviting.

For the island, we stayed within the picnic-inspired story in a more subtle way. The swivel stools in faux tan leather, detailed with baseball-style stitching, bring in a nostalgic outdoor feeling without making the design feel too literal. Paired with hand-blown lighting that softly echoes the folded curves of a baseball glove, the space feels playful, personal, and still refined.

Now, the dining area feels brighter, warmer, and more connected to the wooded setting around it. It's no longer just a place to sit down for a meal. It feels like an indoor picnic surrounded by comfort, memory, and nature.
