School Dinner Chocolate Concrete with Custard ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿฎ
A school dinner classic, chocolate concrete is a simple yet deliciously crunchy chocolate traybake, often served with warm custard. The name comes from its firm texture, but donโ€™t worryโ€”it softens beautifully when dunked in custard!

Ingredients:
For the Chocolate Concrete:
๐Ÿซ Cocoa powder โ€“ 50g
๐Ÿฅ„ Self-raising flour โ€“ 200g
๐Ÿงˆ Unsalted butter โ€“ 150g (melted)
๐Ÿš Granulated sugar โ€“ 150g
๐Ÿฅš Egg โ€“ 1 (beaten)
For the Custard:
๐Ÿฅ› Whole milk โ€“ 500ml
๐Ÿฆ Vanilla extract โ€“ 1 tsp
๐Ÿฅ„ Caster sugar โ€“ 50g
๐ŸŒฝ Cornflour โ€“ 2 tbsp
๐Ÿฅš Egg yolks โ€“ 2
Method:
For the Chocolate Concrete:
1๏ธโƒฃ Preheat the oven to 180ยฐC (160ยฐC fan). Grease and line a baking tin (approx. 20cm x 20cm).
2๏ธโƒฃ In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, and sugar.
3๏ธโƒฃ Pour in the melted butter and beaten egg, then stir until a crumbly dough forms.
4๏ธโƒฃ Press the mixture firmly into the baking tin (this helps create that signature hard texture).
5๏ธโƒฃ Bake for 20 minutes. It will firm up as it cools, so donโ€™t overbake.
6๏ธโƒฃ Sprinkle with extra sugar while still warm for a traditional touch. Allow to cool completely before slicing into squares.
