I've been getting the same question a lot lately: "Is it actually worth it to put in a wood stove with oil prices where they are?"
So let's just look at the numbers.

A typical Maine home uses 800–900 gallons of heating oil a winter. At today's price of about $4.85/gallon, that's roughly $4,000 a season just to stay warm.

The same home heated primarily with wood goes through about 4–5 cords. At $300–$400 a cord delivered, you're looking at $1,500–$1,800.

Difference: somewhere around $2,000+ a winter.

But I'm not going to tell you it's a no-brainer, because it isn't for everyone. A quality wood stove and a proper install is real money up front. Wood needs to be stored dry. You have to load it, tend it, sweep the chimney every year. If you want the savings without the work, pellet stoves are worth looking at — different math, different lifestyle fit.

Our newest team member is outside the Yarmouth store, and honestly, he might have the most energy out of all of us.

If you’ve driven by and seen the big wavy inflatable Hearth Doctor guy dancing around, yes, that’s us.

He’s here to help people find the store, make the ride down Route 1 a little more entertaining, and remind everyone that fireplace and stove season starts long before the first cold night.

Give him a wave next time you drive by.

Would you have noticed the pipe first?

Most people walk into a showroom and look straight at the stove. But on this setup, the pipe is part of the whole look.

This Vermont Castings gas stove has matching powder-coated pipe, and it makes the installation feel finished instead of pieced together.

For customers who care about the details, we can powder coat stove pipe so it better matches the stove, the room, or the style of the home.

Now we need your opinion.
Is the matching red pipe a good choice, or would you keep it classic with black?

Team Red or Team Black?

🔥 What stove would someone with 20+ years in the hearth industry choose for his own home?

For Sebastian Milazzo, our Brunswick Store Manager, the answer is the Jotul F500 Oslo.

Sebastian brings over 20 years of experience with him. Some folks may remember him from McVety’s Hearth and Home in Yarmouth, where he was one of the store managers before joining The Hearth Doctor in Brunswick.

What he enjoys most about this work is helping people find the right solution for their home and working with people every day.

Something people might not guess? He loves East Coast swing dancing. 🕺

Outside of work, Sebastian enjoys time with family, church, friends, playing baseball with his son, rock climbing with his daughter, and talking with his wife about the good things in life.

If you’ve worked with Sebastian over the years, at McVety’s or The Hearth Doctor, what’s something you remember about the experience?

And if you haven’t, what kind of stove would you want in your own home?

We’re looking to add someone great to our team at The Hearth Doctor.

We’re hiring a licensed Maine Propane & Natural Gas Technician to join our service team. Most of our work involves servicing and troubleshooting fireplaces and hearth appliances for homeowners across southern Maine.

Our team works out of our locations in Auburn, Brunswick, and Yarmouth, serving homeowners throughout the surrounding areas.

This is steady, year-round work with a growing local company that takes pride in doing things the right way.

If you or someone you know holds a Maine gas license and takes pride in clean, professional work, I’d love to connect.

Please feel free to message me directly or share this post with anyone who might be a good fit.

Thanks everyone — referrals are always appreciated.

🔥 Quick Wood Stove Check

Before the cold really sets in, take a minute to check two important things:

✔ Catalyst (if your stove has one)
A dirty or clogged catalyst can reduce heat output, cause poor burns, and lead to excess smoke. In some cases, the stove may struggle to stay in catalytic mode at all.

✔ Door & glass gaskets
Loose or worn gaskets allow extra air into the firebox, making the stove harder to control, burning wood faster, and reducing efficiency.

Both of these issues can lead to less heat, more wood use, and unnecessary wear on your stove.

A quick check now can help your stove run cleaner, hotter, and more efficiently all winter. 🔥
