🍊Sometimes the best part of vintage is what you don't see at first.

I always try to identify what a piece of art is, which often means carefully opening the back. That's when I found a wonderful surprise.

Tucked behind this mid-century artwork signed M.E. Gilbert was a handwritten note connected to the piece and its history. The note begins with Christmas wishes to "Shirley & Bob" and casually mentions selling a motel to a man in Florida.

Of course, that sent me down a research rabbit hole. 🔍

The trail led to Bedford, Pennsylvania, where I uncovered connections to the Gilbert family, a local motel, and Gilbert Horse Stables. Nevin Gilbert was involved in harness racing and operated the stables in the Bedford area. With a stable scene as the subject of the artwork, that connection made the story even more intriguing. There are still parts of the story to uncover - which, for me, is half the fun of finding old things.

I've preserved a copy of the letter on the back of the artwork so its story can stay with it. 💗

The piece is now hanging on my outside gallery wall at the Antique Mall of Dade City. 🖼️
