Most storage fails because it is planned around categories. Family life runs on routines.

A school bag does not land in a drawer because the drawer has a label. It lands wherever a child stops after coming through the door.

The same pattern shows up everywhere.

School letters on the worktop. Laundry on the sofa. Football boots by the back door. Coats on a chair.

These are not random mess points. They show where storage needs to be.

Good storage sits where things already land. It is easy to reach, easy to repeat, and still works when everyone is tired.

This flat already had two bedrooms. What it lacked was a shared space that worked for family life.

The original kitchen-dining area was too narrow for a family of four to cook, eat and sit together comfortably. The enclosed balcony was cut off from the main room.

The layout was rebuilt around the spaces the family used most. Removing the balcony wall brought that area into the shared living space. Relocating the central divider gave the kitchen, dining and sitting area the depth they needed.

The main bedroom became smaller. The clients chose that because they wanted a proper sofa area and a table where the family could eat together.

They kept two private bedrooms and gained the shared space missing from the original plan.

A home can have enough rooms and still not have enough room to live.

Would you make a main bedroom smaller to create a better shared family space?

A few pages from a recent design project.

This is what a room looks like before a single thing is bought. The layout, lighting, joinery, materials and furniture are all considered together, before anything is ordered or built.

Whether I’m working with families across Kent or remotely elsewhere, the process stays the same. Every project starts by understanding how the room needs to work. The finishes come afterwards.

If you’re planning a renovation or redesign, this is the stage that shapes everything that follows.

Why lighting changes everything.

The right lighting can make a room feel calm, welcoming and easy to live in.

The wrong lighting can leave even a beautifully designed space feeling flat.

She knocked through the kitchen and living room to bring the family together. Six months later, she was going to bed at half past eight just to get away from it.

Open-plan promises connection, and it delivers. What nobody mentions is that the connection has no off switch. When the kitchen, the dining table and the sofa share one room, there is nowhere to step away from the dishes, the noise, or the evidence of a day that isn't finished yet. The person carrying the mental load of the home usually feels this first and feels it most.

This is not an argument against open plan. It is an argument for proper design. The best family homes are not one large room. They are connected spaces that can still feel separate when someone needs them to. Most open plans deliver only the first half.

So before you remove a wall, ask the question that matters more than any other: where will people go when they want to be alone?

Have you lived in an open plan? I'd be interested to hear how it held up.

Most homes don’t feel quite right because of how they look.

They feel that way because of how they work.

I see this often. Everything looks finished. The materials are good. The furniture is in place. But living in the space still feels harder than it should be.

You move things around.
You try to make it work.
But something still feels off.

Because the issue isn’t what you chose.

It’s how the space was planned.

When the layout isn’t properly considered from the beginning, everything else becomes a compromise.

Good homes are not built from products.

They are built from clear decisions about how the space should work first.

Most renovation mistakes don’t happen during the build.

They happen before it even starts.

I see this often. People choose kitchens, finishes or furniture first, without fully understanding how the space should actually work.

Then everything else has to adjust around those early decisions.

And that’s where problems begin.

You start moving things around.
You try to make it work.
But something still feels off.

Because the issue isn’t what you chose.

It’s how the space was planned.

Good homes are not built from products.

Most people try to fix their home with decor.
New furniture. New colours. New styling.
But if the layout doesn’t work, nothing really improves.
You keep adjusting things, but the space still feels off.
That’s because the problem isn’t what you see.
It’s how the space is planned.
