Beware the The ides of March, as it is soon upon us and so the 39th anniversary of when I was birthed during a full moon. Et tu, Brute? is a Latin phrase literally meaning “and you, Brutus?” or “also you, Brutus?”, often translated as “You as well, Brutus?”, “You too, Brutus?”, or
“Even you, Brutus?”. The quote appears in Act 3, Scene 1 of William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar, where it is spoken by the Roman dictator Julius Caesar, at the moment of his assassination, to his friend Marcus Junius Brutus, upon recognizing him as one of the assassins.

A bit a Lehigh Valley history for the 250th. The Lehigh or Allentown style powder horn is a distinctive style of black powder horn made in the Lehigh Valley during the 1770-80s for the Continental Army. The number of colonial furniture makers in the valley were definitely an influence in style. Although their names are not known there where at least 4 shops making this style horn in then Northampton County based on existing examples. Along with Pennsylvania Long Rifles being made by my 6x great uncle Peter Neihard in his shop next to the Lehigh River in what’s now Laury’s Station (about 3 miles from my painting studio), the Valley was a hot bed of Pennsylvania Dutch arms production for the revolutionary cause. A lot of thought went into the design. Beautifully made to historic specifications by my friend and horner Chris Helsel from Fairfield, PA and painted by me. Featuring a federal eagle with a keystone breast plate adorned with 13 stars symbolizing how Pennsylvania was then and is now at the heart of American liberty and a true bellwether of national identity. Clutching a corn stalk in its left talon for the Native American history of our land and 13 leaf olive branch in its right as peace for the future. The reverse is the “Lehigh Lady Liberty” a decoration carved by my ancestor and gunsmith Peter Neihard next to the trigger guard on the underside of his rifles. There’s a few story’s as to her meaning, one that she is a Leni Lenape maiden. The other is that she is a “French W**re” an insult often used by British loyalists and the lobster backs for George Washington’s Troops and their patriot supporters. It being my family that was carving her, with our sense of humor, I’d guess the later. Either way it’s an often overlooked piece of the Lehigh Valley’s crucial role in the founding of our nation 250 years ago. This horn is being donated to the Pennsylvania Federation of Black Powder Shooters and will be raffled off at the Kempton Gun Makers Fair this July in celebration of our Semiquincentennial. #1776
