For many individuals, cultural identity is an important aspect of who they are. It is a way of connecting with their heritage, traditions, and values. When individuals from marginalized or underrepresented communities see their culture reduced to a stereotypical costume, it can be hurtful and demeaning. Cultures are not costumes to be put on for one night of the year and then discarded. They are living, breathing identities that deserve to be respected and celebrated in a meaningful way.
