One of the most revered saints, Saint Demetrius, of the Orthodox Christian Church and the patron saint of Thessaloniki, where he was born, lived, and was martyred. His feast day is celebrated on October 26, and on November 8 for those following the Julian Calendar.

Born around 280 during Emperor Maximian's reign, Demetrius came from an aristocratic family and became a centurion at just 22. He embraced Christianity, becoming a passionate preacher and teaching his disciples in underground chambers near public baths.

Captured for his faith, Demetrius refused to renounce it, telling Maximian, “I believe only in my Christ.” This led to his imprisonment. Meanwhile, one of his disciples, Nestor, challenged the formidable wrestler Lyaeus in the emperor’s games, defeating and killing him. Enraged, Maximian ordered both Nestor and Demetrius executed.

Demetrius was buried at the site of his martyrdom, where a significant church was later built. He is closely associated with Thessaloniki, regarded as its protector against various invaders. The liberation of the city on his feast day in 1912 is viewed as a miracle.

Today we commemorate Saint James the Apostle, a leading figure in the early Christian Church in Jerusalem, he is referred to as "the Just" because he was the son of Joseph from a previous marriage before his betrothal to the Theotokos Mary. His memory is honored by the Christian Church on October 23 and on the Sunday after the Nativity of Christ.

James did not follow Christ during His public ministry. However, after the Resurrection, when the Lord appeared to him, he believed and took on responsible activities in the early Church. He was the first bishop of Jerusalem and participated in the Jerusalem Apostolic Council (49 AD). He remained closely connected to the Judeo-Christian communities and was held in high esteem by the Jews. Josephus refers to him as "the Just" and mentions that James was martyred by stoning in 62 AD.

James is considered the author of the first Divine Liturgy, which was later shortened by Saint Basil the Great and then by John Chrysostom due to its length. He is also attributed with the first of the seven Catholic Epistles in the New Testament.

He emphasizes our new identity as children of God, who bestows His abundant gifts, which we, His children, must share equally.

He condemns greed as entirely incompatible with the Christian identity and establishes that relationships among people should be governed by justice and love.

Saint Luke, one of the four evangelists, is an important figure in the Christian Church and a companion of the Apostle Paul. He is traditionally believed to have authored the third synoptic Gospel, "According to Luke," and the "Acts of the Apostles." His feast day is celebrated on October 18.

Born in Antioch, Syria, in the 1st century, Luke was among the educated of his time. Initially a pagan, he is not mentioned in Paul’s list of Jewish disciples, and little is known about his conversion to Christianity.

Tradition attributes to Luke the painting of an icon of the Virgin Mary. He joined Paul on his second missionary journey, traveling to Macedonia and likely remaining in Philippi until the end of Paul’s third journey. He also accompanied Paul from Caesarea to Rome.

After Paul’s death, details about Luke’s life are scarce, but tradition claims he preached in Dalmatia, France, Italy, Macedonia, and Achaea. Some accounts say he journeyed to Egypt, where he was ordained as a bishop and died.

Various sources suggest he died in Thebes of Boeotia, with some claiming he was martyred. Isidore of Seville notes he was 74 at death, while Nicetas Callistus states he was 80.

Luke is remembered as a painter of the Virgin Mary, a tradition supported by Orthodox hymnography. His works demonstrate a strong command of Hellenistic Greek and are among the earliest historical texts in Christianity. In the Western tradition, he is the patron saint of artists, doctors, surgeons, students, and butchers.

The exact details of Ignatius's birth and nationality are uncertain, but he became the bishop of Antioch around 68-70 AD. Known for his strong leadership, he shepherded his flock during a time of persecution.

When Emperor Trajan launched a campaign against Christians, Ignatius boldly defended the Church before him. This courage led to his arrest and transfer to Rome. Despite efforts by Christians there to save him, Ignatius expressed a deep desire for martyrdom, urging them to accept God’s will.

On December 20, 107 AD, he was killed by wild beasts in the amphitheater. Some of his bones were preserved and later honored in Antioch before being moved to Rome in 540 AD.

Ignatius remained steadfast in Christ’s teachings until his death, famously stating that "whoever abides in the teaching of Christ has both the Father and the Son." His unwavering faith earned him the title Theophorus, meaning "God-bearer," and his legacy continues to inspire Christians today.

~~~~~~~~
“We recognize a tree by its fruit, and we should be able to identify a Christian by their actions. The evidence of faith should be apparent in our lives, as being a Christian means more than just professing beliefs. It should be reflected in practical, visible ways. Indeed, it is far better to live out our beliefs quietly than to speak about them eloquently without truly embodying them.”
— Saint Ignatius of Antioch ☦
O Virgin Mary, I humbly beseech you to free me from the chains of sin that bind me from my lustful desires and transgressions.
Deliver me from the grip of carelessness and the burden of excessive worry,
from harmful curiosity and idle chatter,
from fruitless indulgence and pride,
from negligence, drunkenness, and a lack of compassion.
Remove from me all wicked desires and the stain of impurity,
the trap of extravagance and the shadows of insensitivity.
Take away my tendency to jest inappropriately,
my enjoyment of excess,
the laughter born of immorality, and all forms of evil.
In their place, grant me, O pure Maiden, the gift of fasting,
a spirit of carefulness, vigilance, and perfect obedience.
Instill in me attentiveness in all things
and sharpen my discernment.
Bestow upon me silence, order, and holy patience.
Encourage in me a fervent desire to work towards my perfection,
and a zeal for virtues and spiritual practice.
O most-holy Lady, safeguard my soul, my heart, and my mind
in holiness, and protect them in your sacred virginity.
Amen.
Saint Pelagia lived in Antioch in the mid-3rd century. She came from a wealthy family, was beautiful, and lived a sinful, promiscuous life. However, God's grace led to her conversion.
During a council in Antioch, the holy Bishop Nonnus, while preaching, saw Pelagia pass by in a lavish display. Unlike the other bishops who turned away, Nonnus sighed and remarked how much effort Pelagia put into pleasing men, while many neglect their souls to please God. This stirred his soul to pray fervently for her salvation.
That night, Nonnus had a dream of a dirty dove that became pure after being washed. The next day, Pelagia heard his sermon about salvation, was deeply moved, and wept for her sins. She wrote to the bishop, asking for forgiveness and to confess her sins. Despite initial hesitation, Nonnus saw her sincere repentance. She confessed publicly, expressing deep remorse for her past life, and was baptized. She gave away her wealth to the poor and began a life of devotion.
Pelagia eventually left Antioch, disguised herself in men's clothing, and lived as a hermit on the Mount of Olives. She engaged in extreme asceticism for three years. After her death, it was revealed that she had been a woman when her body was prepared for burial. Her life of repentance and transformation became an inspiration to many, and she is commemorated on October 8th.
Saint Thomas the Apostle, one of the twelve disciples of Christ, was from a family of fishermen. After Christ’s Resurrection, when He first appeared to the other disciples, Thomas doubted their account. Later, when the Lord appeared again in the upper room, Thomas was present. Jesus invited him to touch the wounds from the nails of the crucifixion, encouraging him not to be faithless but to believe. Overcome, Thomas exclaimed, "My Lord and my God." Jesus responded, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed," offering a lesson for all who doubt the truth of the Gospel.
According to tradition, after receiving the Holy Spirit, Thomas was sent to preach the Gospel to the Persians, Medes, and Indians. In India, he was arrested by King Misdaeus after he catechized and baptized the king's son, Juzanes, his wife Tertia, and their daughters Mygdonia and Narka. Thomas was imprisoned and then handed over to five soldiers who took him to a mountain and killed him by spearing. In this way, God honored Thomas not only with the mission of preaching the Gospel but also with the gift of martyrdom, giving his life for the faith he proclaimed.
