Nine years ago today, a protest led by white supremacists over the removal of a Confederate statue in Charlottesville, VA, escalated into violence, and a white supremacist killed 32-year-old counter-protester Heather Heyer.
Rather than use his platform to diffuse tensions and unite the country, President Donald Trump defended the extremists, saying they included some “very fine people,” while expressing sympathy for their demonstration.
Today, white supremacists still use armed intimidation and threats of violence to silence those they hate. We honor Heather and all whose lives have been taken by hate-fueled violence by continuing our work to in all its forms.
