If you took 10 minutes in the garden today, what could you find?

Hi I'm Lana, I'm 35 and I still climb trees.

This is one of the things that made me realise just how tough moss can be. 🌱

Many common herbicides target processes in vascular plants. Mosses aren’t vascular plants — no roots or internal plumbing system moving water around like grasses and weeds have.

So while the vegetation around these roadside reflectors had browned off after spraying, the moss was still green.

It’s something I’ve been watching here for a while now.

Moss is often described as incredibly delicate, but the more I observe it, the more I realise just how resilient it can be.

I love going out into the garden after a windy night - lichen surprises everywhere!

69 days and 2cm of new growth. 🌱

People often talk about moss as though it barely grows at all, so I thought this was worth documenting.
This little terrarium has been closed and sitting on a cool porch out of direct sunlight since July 7. Same moss, same soil it came with and essentially left alone.

What's interesting is that the growth I'm seeing right now is mostly upwards. Moss shoots grow from their tips, but that doesn't mean this little forest will just keep getting taller forever.

Depending on the species, stems can branch and creep across the substrate, mats can thicken, and fragments can establish in new spots.

So now I'm curious about what happens next.

Today I'm taking a proper measurement and putting it back exactly where it was.
See you in another 69 days. 👀

Do you remember that GIF of Elmo standing there triumphantly while everything behind him is on fire?

That’s how my spring garden prep is going.

It's a no from me 🌿 😅

Lichens are a little more complicated than "good air = lichen, bad air = no lichen."

Some species are incredibly sensitive to air pollution, while others are much more tolerant.
That's why scientists often look at which species are growing, not just whether lichen is present.

It's a bit like fish. Finding a fish doesn't tell you whether a river is healthy but finding certain fish species can.

Have you noticed lichen where you live? 🌿
