Heritage Day reminds us how much of a residence's character comes from what's local, a handcrafted piece, a material sourced close to home, a story passed down.

We are grateful to work with skilled local makers on every project we design. Happy Heritage Day from all of us at OLALA.

A thought for the week: you've worked hard for this. Your home should be where you finally get to enjoy it.

We design spaces that reflect what you've built, so every room feels like it was worth the effort.

Project Spotlight: A Residence on the North Coast, KwaZulu-Natal

Warmth runs through every room in this home, travertine stone walls, rich timber veneer joinery and leather furnishings creating a palette that feels grounded rather than staged. A floating staircase anchors the living space, while a hanging bubble chair and sculptural round coffee table bring a playful, considered contrast against the natural stone backdrop.

Double-volume glazing floods the kitchen with light, and the outdoor dining deck, styled with Panton chairs against a reclaimed timber table, extends the living space out into the evening.

A true team effort from start to finish.

Storage should disappear into the design, not dominate it. Built-in joinery, furniture with hidden depth, considered use of vertical space.

Part three of our small space series is all about storage that stays out of sight.

Sourcing is where a lot of the OLALA magic happens, and most of it is invisible in the final photograph.

From local artisans to specialist suppliers, every piece in a finished residence has a story behind how it got there.

A thought for the week: perfection was never the goal, a home that feels collected over time always wins.

We would rather layer one considered find into a room than chase a showroom finish.

A small styling shift can carry a whole vignette. A tray, one considered object, a stack of books, the kind of detail we spend real time getting right on every project.

Light and reflection can make a small room feel considerably more generous. A well-placed mirror, a lighter wall colour, layered lighting instead of one central source.

Part two of our small space series looks at how light shapes the sense of scale.

A thought for the week: the best rooms are the ones you don't want to leave.

That is usually less about the finishes and more about how the space actually holds you.
