FROM 54 THAI WIND CHIMES… TO THIS 🤍

About ten years ago, I holidayed in Thailand and decided to make a huge Capiz shell chandelier for my lounge back home.

Simple idea… except I couldn’t find loose Capiz shells anywhere! 😂

So I did what any determined designer would do — I drove around the island collecting every Capiz shell wind chime I could find.

By the end of the trip I had bought 54 WIND CHIMES, somehow getting them all home in my luggage with a little help from friends! 😂

Back home, I dismantled every one and used the shells to create a large chandelier for my old house.

Then we moved to Simbithi, and as much as I loved it, there was no right place for it. So it was carefully packed away… where it stayed for years.

Until recently, I decided it was time to give those shells a new life.

I took the chandelier apart, and my gardener helped me clean & sort hundreds of shells. I also found an old Capiz chandelier on a local buy-and-sell group & added its larger shells to my collection.

Now I had hundreds of Capiz shells and knew I could create something special.

I had grown tired of the coastal painting above a cabinet, but the frame was the perfect size and colour. This wall is also visible from the road through our glass front entrance, so I wanted something striking — and meaningful.

More than anything, I wanted something I had made, not just bought.

So down came the painting. I painted over the canvas, and began layering the shells. Smaller shells formed the detailed background and centre, while larger shells added depth, texture, & movement.

Hundreds of shells later… this is the result. 🤍

And my favourite part is seeing it at night. From outside, it glows through the glass entrance, catching the light beautifully.

Exactly what I had hoped for. ✨

Dating an Interior Designer should absolutely come with a disclaimer… my poor husband Craig… 😂 You will wait while we photograph restaurant bathrooms, hear opinions about everything from down lights to TV interiors, paint colours and everything in between… There is no “Popping in for 5 minutes” at a furniture showroom or lighting shop, And Yes, we absolutely do all have a tape measure in our handbags😂 And for the record, we’re not sorry🤷🏼‍♀️… Interior designers…. House with a View | Kids Bedrooms

Even the kids’ bedrooms deserved to make the most of that incredible sea view. 🌊

We widened the aluminium sliding doors to open up the view, then gave each room its own personality. We added Soft pastel striped wallpaper & artwork to the daughters room, new fitted headboards and pedestals added warmth to both rooms, while a blue feature wall, new artwork and a clever surfboard display brought colour and character to the son’s room.

Fresh, fun spaces designed to grow with them — with that beautiful ocean always in sight. 🤍

Texture is having a MAJOR moment. ❤️✨
