Severe flooding has hit parts of the Western Cape wine industry, with farms along the Breede River reporting submerged vineyards, damaged infrastructure and inaccessible properties.

Springfield Wine Estate says more than 20ha of newly planted Sauvignon Blanc vineyards are underwater after a tributary burst its banks, with the full extent of the damage still unclear.

Producers across Robertson, Bonnievale and other wine regions are continuing to assess the impact as rising rivers, flooded roads and dam releases raise concerns about further damage.

“It’s hard to say, as we can’t access more than half the farm. In the picture, there are 20ha completely underwater,” says Jenna Bruwer, head of sales and marketing at Springfield Wine Estate.

“Really disheartening, especially since it has happened so many times in the last three years,” she added. “Every year we prepare better than the previous one… but the sheer force of water is unbelievable.”

Brioche, quail egg, porcini hollandaise. Roast duck and foie gras before things get decadent with rum canelé and passion fruit ganache.

Live jazz, long tables, and ten unhurried courses at The Old Biscuit Mill, Woodstock.

Cost: R1 390 per person for the set menu. Add bottomless Graham Beck NV for R495. Vegetarian and pescatarian menus available; vegan with prior notice.

In a dazzling celebration of South Africa’s culinary talent, the country’s top chefs traded their kitchen whites for evening wear as they gathered at Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre Centre on Monday, 23 March, for the 2026 Woolworths Eat Out Awards ceremony.

FYN claimed the coveted Restaurant of the Year title while Johannes Richter of The LivingRoom was named the Eat Out Woolworths Financial Services Chef of the Year.

The awards also marked the beginning of a new era. Eat Out announced its move to News24 to expand its reach and connect with more South Africans.
