There is something wonderfully honest about this old Cape Country Kitchen Dresser. Crafted predominantly from solid Baltic Deal wood, it has acquired a patina that only decades of service can produce.

Small decorative details enliven and give further personality: the turned solid yellowwood bun feet, the original brass cup handles to the drawers and pull handles on the doors that have been polished; the charming turned k**b latch that secures the cupboard doors; the top shelf that is finished with a low backsplash with softly rounded edges,; and the sides of the upper racks that are gorgeously shaped.

Unlatching and opening the cupboard doors reveals a spacious interior with a full-width half-depth shelf.

This is a really gorgeous, sympathetically-restored dresser that will particularly appeal to those who appreciate furniture that wears its history proudly rather than concealing it beneath a perfect finish.

CONDITION

Beautiful High-End French Provincial-style Contemporary Armoire | PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR PRICE

This is an exceptionally well-made contemporary wardrobe, offering the charm of a traditional French country armoire combined with the practicality of modern construction.

Made from solid poplar and finished in a warm and rich golden honey-toned satin finish, it features an outward-flaring moulded cornice with flat top, framed panel doors, decorative iron hardware and traditional pegged joinery details. The quality of construction is evident throughout, from the thick doors and sturdy internal divisions to the beautifully finished interior.

The locking doors, each with their own pretty key, operate on full-height vertical bolts and open to reveal an interior with left side providing full hanging space, while the right offers shelving together with a drawer below.

What I particularly love about this piece is its reassuring weight and solidity — and how it’s been built incorporating traditional construction methods and intended to provide decades of service. It is increasingly difficult to find furniture of this high quality in contemporary production.

Elegant Walnut Chest of Four Drawers — with Marble Top & Pretty Key | PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR PRICE

This is a magnificent 1930/40s Sheppard & Barker (label on rear) chest of drawers by the high-end Johannesburg furniture retailers/ makers.

Its design incorporates some classical Queen Anne and George I influences, blinged up with a rich Italian feel. The beautiful facade is faced in a rich walnut finish that has been meticulously book-matched to showcase an incredibly lively, fiery grain pattern. To enliven the finish by contrasting against it, each of the four drawers are fronted by brass escutcheons and accented with a pair of polished brass handles featuring intricate, highly detailed ornamental carvings on the backplates. A single pretty key accompanies which unlocks all four drawers.

At the base, beneath the prettily undulating apron, the piece is sturdily supported on all four sides by classic cabriole legs, each decorated with a carved scallop shell motif on the knee. The chest is then beautifully crowned with a polished warm-white marble top featuring soft veining, which further offers a luxurious contrast against the dark walnut wood.

This is a lovely chest to use anywhere to add some beauty and elegance to a room.
One can’t beat a chest with inset marble.

5. Beautifully Carved Indian Teak Altar / Shelving Unit | R6450

This wonderfully Indian teak altar, or display shelving, unit is richly decorated with hand-carved floral and foliate motifs across its deep front frieze, complemented by shaped side supports, and then a full-depth lower shelf with a shallower upper shelf.

Originally likely used as a household shrine or temple altar, it can be repurposed equally well to use as a bookshelf, drinks station, display unit, bathroom vanity/ cabinet or hallway piece…you could place your shoes on the shelves. Any way you use it, it was built to take a load, and is very sturdy. It would also work wonderfully placed on top of a kitchen counter, creating a shelving arrangement that has texture and character.

A lovely detail are the remnants of pale green paint that can still be seen nestled within some of the carved details, hinting at an earlier decorative finish and adding to its sense of age and history. The solid wood has developed a lovely patina over the years, with variations in colour and wear that only enhance its character.

This beauty is equally at home in an eclectic contemporary interior, a country home, a verandah filled with plants, or amongst a collection of treasured objects. It’s lovely.

CONDITION
Excellent and very sturdy condition and has been lightly refurbished, however please note this is lightly pre-loved. A couple of minor age-related marks, wear and variations to the wood consistent with age and use. Remnants of light green paint remain visible within sections of the carved decoration, contributing to the piece’s authentic character.

This is a beautiful early 20th Century, sturdy lowboy that has carefully been stripped back to once more reveal its light blonde oak with gorgeous tight grain. It has then been sealed, to both retain and enhance the buttery lightness of the wood.

While quite simple in design, it achieves a high degree of elegance through the careful use of gorgeous details such as the prettily turned legs which end in small steel castors, and the brass escutcheons which shine on the drawer fronts next to the gorgeous, original drop handles.

This beautiful Georgian-style chest of bow-fronted drawers from the early 20th Century is particularly attractive and well-made, and could be perfect as a slightly-oversized bedside pedestal which you can contain some proper storage inside of as well.

The chest’s details elegantly enliven its understated design, with fine stringing inlay to the fronts of the four drawers, original brass drop handles and single escutcheon, moulded edges along the top, and lovely shaped bracket feet below.
