FOUNDERS - The Pikus Brothers

The spelling of the CribStöre is curated, just like its edited collection of homeware. The umlaut on the ö represents the two brothers behind the brand, Philip and Stephen Pikus, who launched the CribStöre in 2022 as a way to support South African design entrepreneurs. When seen on its own, the ö expresses the emotion of wonder that the brothers wish to invoke through their local product offering.

Philip started his first interior design company in Johannesburg at the age of 19, and has since worked on the interiors of some of the country’s best wine farms, hotels, guest houses and private residences, even creating an eponymous range of locally produced fabrics. More recently Director at Urban Fabrics, Philip has now joined forces with Stephen to open the CribStöre, where they will soon be launching their own in-house range of products too.

Stephen began his career working for an NGO in Limpopo, funding its initiatives by recycling and upcycling trash into lighting. He’s won the Eskom Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition, been shortlisted for the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards in London (category: light installation), and was recently nominated for the Greening the Future Award. Now based in Joburg, he works with top interior designers and architects, turning recycled, re-purposed and renewable materials into custom handcrafted lighting, while upskilling and employing people in the process. Ninety percent of the people in his team come from programmes such as the Youth Employment Services (YES) Programme, for which he hosts year-long internships.
