We’re looking for an organised, proactive and hands-on Operations & Administration Manager to join our team.
This is a senior role at the heart of the studio, overseeing day-to-day operations while supporting the Director and coordinating clients, projects, production, finance and business development.

We’re looking for someone who is commercially minded, detail-oriented, energetic and confident working in a fast-paced design and manufacturing environment.

Untitled (after W.B.)
This is a particularly personal piece for me. It is the only bench I have ever made that directly reflects the techniques I learnt during my three-and-a-half-year apprenticeship with South African artist Wim Botha.

The piece was conceived around a sense of energy and movement. Each timber component is individually hand-machined and fitted. At one end, intricate timber joints build into a dense cluster of sharp bevelled angles. This forms the source, or origin, of the piece. From there, the geometry begins to break down into lines and facets that travel through the length of the bench, gradually becoming more controlled until they resolve into a precise point.

It was a way for me to translate techniques I had learnt while working with Wim into my own language as a designer, while also expressing my long standing love of working with timber. The construction methods themselves had been developed and refined over years, and I wanted that history of making to remain visible in the finished piece.

The bench is built around a 3-metre electro-galvanised mild steel structure with stainless steel legs and fittings, onto which the individually made timber elements are clad. The entire piece is finished in black, allowing the facets, shadows and changing planes of the timber to define the form.

Untitled (after W.B.) was created in 2014 for the Southern Guild Collection for Design Miami/Basel and was featured by Design Indaba in The Artist’s Apprentice.

More than a decade later, it remains an important piece for me. A record of what I learnt during that period, the influence of Wim’s work and approach, and how those techniques became part of my own development as a designer.

When we first introduced our Trinket Boxes, the collection was still in its early stages. Since then, it has continued to evolve, with new designs inspired by bugs, fauna and flora, tortoises, pangolins and other forms from the natural world.

Our original Trinket Box featured a ceramic fish inlay. Today, the collection includes an expanding range of designs, each combining dark composite cork with a hand-glazed ceramic relief inlaid into the lid. Various reactive glaze finishes are available, and the collection is currently produced in three different sizes and shapes.

We love the contrast between the raw, tactile quality of the cork and the refined ceramic surfaces. Each raised motif brings its own character to the piece while maintaining a strong connection to nature.

The interiors are finished in smooth dark cork, creating a refined surface for jewellery, keepsakes and other small personal treasures.

Every ceramic element is individually made, glazed and fired by hand. Subtle variations in colour, texture and finish are therefore inherent to the process, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike.

It is important to note that Wiid Design does not focus on mass-produced commercial pieces. Our work is developed as a continually evolving collection of distinctive objects, particularly through our ongoing exploration of ceramic and cork combinations. New forms, glazes and designs are constantly being developed, and additional imagery and product information will be added online as the collection continues to grow.

Our timber benches have been a signature of our studio since 2011, with a strong focus on reclaimed and responsibly sourced beams.

The intention has always been to preserve as much of the original timber as possible, allowing the age, history and natural character of the tree to remain visible.

This bench is crafted from a century-old Douglas Fir beam and fitted with custom stainless steel legs, finished in a vintage green coating.

The piece celebrates honest materials, considered proportions and clean lines, designed to sit comfortably within residential, hospitality and commercial interiors.

Designed and made in South Africa.
