The Tool Room

The Tool Room Artisan hand-forged steel pans

- Crafted by Conrad Hicks
- Made in Cape Town, South Africa
- Shipping Worldwide Our first made objects were tools.

Using an approach of "If you use beautiful tools, you make beautiful things', Conrad decided to develop kitchen implements so as to bring functional art into people's homes. We developed our values around judgements of function that became our instinctive sense of beauty. Ugly forms didn't work. As a result of selective evolutionary principles, our driving force for development was and is striving

for beauty. Our generation is cut off from the tools and implements that keep us alive - we don't know how to use them. The tasks we do are very abstract and unfulfilling. Early tools give us a strong sense of security and understanding. There is no design, only a feeling of "this is good". Each frying and roasting pan is handmade and hand-forged in Observatory, Cape Town, by Conrad himself. They are treated with beeswax to create an almost non-stick layer and require no soap for cleaning. All of Tool Room’s products are ideal for fire cooking and stovetop cooking alongside roasting or baking at high temperatures in the oven. The pans and trays are made to distribute heat evenly ensuring the perfect cook, every time. A companion for adventurous traveller and sous chef in the kitchen, these pans and trays are perfectly designed to last a life time!

Moms don’t want flowers that die.
They want steel forged in fire.

Order by Friday, we will get it to you before Sunday in Cape Town surrounds.
Or grab a gift card and let her choose her weapon.

Flat tyre. Middle of nowhere. Not a problem.
Boeries on the pan before the spare was even out the boot!

Long dirt roads, no signal = exactly where we want to be ⛰️

Beeswax arrives in one massive block.
Time for the sledgehammer.

We break the wax into smaller pieces to wax our pans.
There isn’t a more satisfying way to do it.

To do something properly, it starts with love, then comes technique.

Love for the food.
For the tools in your hands.
For the fire, the process and the people you share it with.

The result can then only carry beauty and meaning.

Thank you for capturing moments that matter.

Heat radiates.
Sparks fly.
Muscles tighten as steel moves under the hammer.

The smell of beeswax.
The breathing forge.
Feel the tongs warm in your hands.

These moments sharpen instinct.
They connect us to the tools we use, and to ourselves.
