I started trying my hand at woodwork whilst I was staying with my Mom for 2 months as I was waiting for transfer to take place on my new home. (Those of you who have had to move back home will understand when I tell you that I felt the need to spend time out of the house some evenings. :-) (Love you, Mom). I came across a Beginner’s Woodworking Course in Paarden Eiland and signed up for a 5 week course (1 night per week).

Both of my Grandfathers had their own Wood Workshop in their garages and, as much as I used to tinker around with hammers and nails with them, I wish I’d paid more attention and let them teach me more about Woodwork. But, I guess, you’re never too old to learn.

Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it and, once I’d moved into my new home in May 2016, I decided to try my hand at making my own decor and fixing up the home using my newly discovered DIY desire. So began my love affair with woodworking. I started making things around the home that I either needed, or simply wanted, instead of buying them or contracting people to do things for me.

I found a lot of inspiration on Pinterest and started by buying a cheap spindle and some rope and converting that into a handy side table in my lounge. Then, having had my braai and patio area built, I made cupboards, braai tops and a patio table and benches for the area. Pretty much, whenever I felt my home was lacking in something, I tried my best to make it, instead of buying it. I’ve made tables, benches, lamps, clocks, dog beds, headboards and kitted out my workshop, which gets moved around frequently as I work in it and buy more tools and need more space. :-)
