Relic of the Road: A Glimpse into Post-War South Africa

1946 Special Petrol Permit for 4 Gallons. While we often think of the end of WWII in 1945 as the "return to normal," items like this tell a different story of the grit and patience required in the post-war years.
The History Behind the Paper
Even after the guns fell silent, South Africa (then the Union of South Africa) maintained strict fuel rationing into 1946.
Global supply chains were fractured, and every drop of "petrol" was a precious commodity.
This specific coupon was a "Special Permit," likely issued for essential business or emergency travel that exceeded the standard monthly allowance. You’ll notice the bilingual Afrikaans (Spesiale Petrolpermit) and English text, along with the handwritten vehicle registration—2412—a security measure to ensure coupons weren't traded on the "black market."

Quick fire facts:
• The Date: March 1946 (MAR. MRT.).
• The Authority: Issued under War Measure No. 53 of 1943.
• The Printing: Marked "G.P.-S." (Government Printing and Stationery).

It’s a small, fragile reminder of a time when a simple Sunday drive wasn't a right, but a carefully rationed privilege.
