Tree of Life 🍃

From patient hands, the story grows,

A quiet thread the artisan knows.

In every line, in every hue,

The Tree of Life begins anew.

Rooted deep in ancient earth,

Carrying memory, carrying birth,

Each branch extends with gentle grace,

A woven map of time and place.

THE ART OF VEGETABLE DYED WOOL

At Zollanvari, colour begins long before the rug is woven.

Our wool is dyed using traditional vegetable dye techniques, where pigments are derived from natural sources such as roots, bark, flowers and minerals.

These natural pigments create the depth, variation and character that cannot be replicated by synthetic dyes.
Every stage of the dyeing process is carried out in-house, under the guidance of master dye specialists who have spent decades refining their craft.

From preparing the wool to controlling temperature, timing and pigment absorption, each dye pot is carefully monitored to ensure colour consistency while preserving the organic beauty of natural dyeing.

This mastery allows Zollanvari rugs to develop a living patina over time softening, maturing and becoming even more beautiful with age.

“Nomadic Greens”

An artwork of greens, gathered from the Zagros Mountains and translated through the hands of our nomadic weavers.

At Zollanvari, every shade is born from nature from pistachio fields to moss covered peaks, dyed with botanicals and hand-knotted with centuries-old mastery.

This is green the Zollanvari way ‘ alive, organic, and deeply rooted in heritage.

In Persian culture, red is the colour of life, courage, and celebration, a symbol of the sun, fire, and the beating heart of the desert.

In the world of Zollanvari rugs, red is not just a colour. It’s an emotion — hand-dyed, hand-woven, and alive.

For centuries, Zollanvari’s nomadic weavers have mastered the ancient art of creating red from nature’s own palette.
The secret lies in madder root, a wild plant growing in the rocky soils of the Zagros Mountains. When its roots are boiled and combined with mineral-rich water, the dye reveals an incredible spectrum of reds , from burnt pomegranate to deep wine and fiery crimson.

Each village has its own “recipe,” passed from mother to daughter. Some add pomegranate rind for warmth, vinegar or iron for deeper tones, or even a dash of camel’s milk to bind the dye.

The wool is hand-spun, soaked in this natural potion, and dried beneath the mountain sun, allowing each strand to glow differently in the light.

When woven together, these reds create Zollanvari’s unmistakable depth and soul, a hue that feels alive, shifting subtly as day turns to dusk.
No two Zollanvari reds are ever identical , each tells its own story of soil, sun, and human touch.

Owning one is like holding a piece of Persian earth, captured forever in thread.

Every Zollanvari rug is a labour of love.

From the first knot to the final finishing touch, our artisans devote themselves to perfection. Even the side bindings, often overlooked, are carefully handwoven with the same care and artistry as the rug itself.

Its this devotion to detail that transforms a rug into a masterpiece, and a home into a sanctuary.

Their wisdom, artistry, and dedication remain at the heart of every rug we create. 💐 Choosing a Zollanvari rug means choosing a story of heritage, dignity, and responsibility. ✨

The story of Zollanvari

Heritage

The story of Zollanvari began in 1947, when at a tender age Gholamreza Zollanvari joined his father’s carpet business, a legacy that had been handed down from his great grandfather. Initially he focused on the traditional products of the nomads of South Persia. Those colourful carpets with high pile, Gabbehs, were knotted only for use in homes as bedspreads and bedcovers. They were and are a vivid expression of the art and soul of the traditional weaving and aesthetic sensibility of southern Persian nomads. Appreciation and demand for Gabbehs grew over the years. Gholamreza Zollanvari began working with the Ghashgha’i and Luri nomads to start weaving new Gabbehs with more contemporary designs.

Mission

Zollanvari carpets embody the spirit of Persian carpet design and weaving – an extraordinary art form that has been treasured across the world for more than 2,000 years. This profound understanding of the splendour and profusion of the Persian weaving aesthetic informs our carpet production, making it unique and timeless – qualities that have established the Zollanvari name as a global trail-blazer in creating carpet art.
