THE HUMBLE PIE. THE TASTE OF NOSTALGIA.

Ah, the humble pie! The garage pie, the quick fix, the decent bite, that good old, yummy pie that somehow always tastes better when the weather turns cold and the rain starts tapping on the windows.

At Franseman, food has always been about the heart. Nostalgia, childhood favourites, seaside holidays and those unforgettable Swakopmund mornings when a pie for breakfast was perfectly acceptable. Some things simply belong to our story. Thank the Lord, AI cannot change that!

Our Franseman pie collection celebrates the classics, each with a little twist of our own. The English black pepper steak pie, the South African bobotie pie, our French coq au vin reimagined as a shiitake mushroom and chicken pie, and for the young at heart, the legendary 1960s burger pie.

Good, honest food, reinvented for today's taste buds, made with quality ingredients and, always, a generous helping of love and care.

WHEN DELICIOUS MEANS CAKE

At Franseman, cake belongs beside a delicious cup of coffee, an afternoon tea, a little spoil, or simply a moment when life calls for something sweet.

Cake is not just for celebrations. It has been part of our lives since that very first birthday. Who remembers their first cake? And how many memories have been made, one slice at a time, ever since?

Here at Franseman, our spoil is real. Our recipes are made the way we love them. We won't claim our cakes are the best in the world, but to us, they are just right. Tried, tested, tasted, adjusted, and loved over and over again.

Some are a little denser, with that beautiful, comforting crumb. Others have the softest, most delicate layers, barely holding their own against the delicious fillings tucked between them.

Hospitality. It’s one of those things that sounds so simple, yet it is probably one of the hardest things to get right. And it is something we are working very hard at here at Franseman.

We want you to feel that you belong. Not like a guest who has come for a visit, but like family popping in for another drink, another coffee, a delicious morsel of goodness, or simply a little time to be. No occasion needed. No explanation required. Just come as you are.

Franseman is more than a beautiful interior. It is a space created to make you feel something. A warm hug, a cuddle, that little exhale when you finally sit down and realise you don't have to be anywhere else just yet. The darker tones, the textures, the intimate corners… all chosen to create a sense of escape, a moment of peace, a little rest for the soul in a world that seldom stops moving.

But there is one thing we cannot design, decorate or manufacture. YOU.

You, our patrons, our Puggies, are our greatest asset. You bring the laughter, the conversations, the celebrations, the stories and sometimes even the chaos! You turn a beautiful space into a living, breathing place where people meet, connect and belong. And that is what makes Franseman.

We dress our wooden tables with ch*****ne, gold and crystal because we believe you deserve to feel special. We layer textures, choose the little details and fuss over the things some might not even notice.

THE ART OF MONDAYING

Mondaying. Yes, we know, it isn't a word. But perhaps it should be! Because Mondaying is a verb. It is the art of restarting, rethinking, refocusing and finding that little bit of vengeance to tackle a brand-new week.

Every Monday carries a promise. A fresh page, new chores, unfinished business from last week, and another opportunity to finish what we started on an absolute high. It might take a little coffee, a deep breath and a gentle shove in the right direction, but here we go again!

Today is our SECOND open Monday at Franseman, and oh, are we excited! The Puggies are already busy pulling everything into place, ready to bring some Franseman magic to your day. We are going to smash it! You will be seated well, served well and, most importantly, EAT WELL. 💚

Our deck remains our sanctuary. The trees casting their shadows, timber glimmering in the golden morning sunshine, and umbrellas offering shelter while the world takes a moment to slow down.

And if Monday has left you feeling a little wintery, we have a remedy. A warm cup of Slowtown coffee, a freshly baked Brötchen or a delicious Treff pie to turn this chilly morning into something worth remembering.

So, Puggies, here's your Monday mission: LIVE WELL, LOVE HARD, LAUGH LOUDLY AND MONDAY HARD!

Because when you get Monday right, the rest of the week stands a spectacular chance.

THE DAY THAT WAS

“Hectic.” “Crazy.” “Delightful.” “Amazing people.” “Celebrations.” “Stories.” “Gossip.” Ohhs, ahhs, wows… and everything in between!

Some frustration: “It takes too long!” And others simply smiled: “Relax, we’re not going anywhere else!”

“Delicious!”
“Beautiful food!”
“You took us on a journey!”
“Can we eat with our hands?”
“Yes, you’re home now!”
“Congratulations on a special place!”
And our favourite: “Thank you… we have time. We could have sat here the whole day!”

These are just a few of the many beautiful comments that filled our day, our hearts and, occasionally, our eyes with tears.

It WAS a beautiful day. And we loved it too, even when our bladders were screaming that it was time to go! 😂

Because that is what Franseman is about. We show up. We put you first. We try to make a difference, one plate, one flower, one conversation and one human connection at a time.

DURBANVILLE, THANK YOU.

What a crazy, exhausting, exhilarating week! We have made mistakes. Many of them. We are human, we are learning, and we own our shortcomings. We ask for a little grace as we find our rhythm and grow into the dream behind those green doors.

Please do not measure us against a large, established franchise or a high-volume restaurant operating like a well-oiled machine. We are building something different. We do things slowly. Yes, slowly. With intention, with heart, with detail, and with the belief that hospitality is about more than getting plates to tables.

To those who came to linger, to laugh, to celebrate, to share stories and simply BE… you made this week extraordinary. You understood the dream. You gave it life.

And to our team, who showed up through difficult circumstances, long hours, exhaustion and challenges: blessed are you for making a difference when making a difference was not easy. You are the heartbeat behind the green doors.

We are tired. We are learning. We are grateful.

And we are NOT GIVING UP YET.

FRIDAY… OUR SECOND FRIDAY OF OPENING THE GREEN DOORS!

What an absolute privilege it has been, and what a bumpy sea we have sailed! But just as the Bible reminds us of Jesus calming the waters, we find comfort in knowing that even the roughest seas become bearable. Slowly, ever so slowly, the horizon is beginning to show.

What a week! Incredible highs, dreadful lows, beautiful blessings, and lessons we never knew we needed. A week that stretched us, tested us, and reminded us why we started this dream in the first place.

BUT HEY, PUGGIES… IT'S FRIDAY!

The day we celebrate making it through another week and look forward to the weekend. And at Franseman, you can be sure those green doors will be opening to another busy few days!

Friday, for us, is synonymous with being one day closer to rest. You might wonder how we can already be tired after barely a week. Well, when you do what you love, pour your heart into what you believe in, and give everything to creating something special, it comes at a cost.

And that cost, dear friends, is sleep. Glorious, peaceful, uninterrupted sleep!

Our mornings begin long before Durbanville wakes up. Bread arrives at 05:00, focaccia goes into the oven, fresh scones and muffins are prepared, and our cakes receive their final touches before the first guest walks through the doors. It's a labour of love, a little madness, plenty of passion, and sometimes a quiet prayer for extra strength.

And then we look at these photographs and remember what Franseman is all about.

Style, elegance, a touch of glamour, and a space to reconnect with yourself. More than a place to eat or drink coffee, it's somewhere to pause, breathe, linger, and simply BE.

To all our Puggies, may your Friday be blessed, your work productive, your coffee strong, and your heart light.

May it be a GOD Friday, filled with grace, gratitude, and the reminder that even when the waters get rough, we are never sailing alone.

FROM TOP TO TAIL… AND GEORGE!

Every kitchen has a hierarchy, and our Franseman green kitchen is no different. As we introduce the food magicians behind the scenes, you will discover that these talented chefs are extraordinary in their approach to food, flavour and creating memorable experiences.

Today, meet GEORGE — OUR TOP-TO-TAIL CHEF!

George is the man who knows how to source the good stuff, respect ingredients and bring flavours together with heart, soul and character. He has a natural instinct for vernacular cooking — knowing what belongs, what doesn't, and when to let ingredients speak for themselves. This is food with personality, purpose and a little magic.

But no kitchen is a one-man show. It takes teamwork, timing, trust and a brigade moving together.

Let's put things into perspective: more than 300 covers a day since opening! That is no small feat for any kitchen. Mistakes happen. We own ours, learn from them and strive to do better. Constructive feedback is welcome — in fact, we need it. But being given the opportunity to address concerns while you are still with us can make all the difference to a team giving its heart and soul.

Some challenges have also been technical: unpredictable Wi-Fi in a building without fibre (we're working on it!) and printers occasionally refusing to print order dockets. Imagine conducting a kitchen symphony when the technology decides to play its own tune!

Today is SMALL SATURDAY, and we keep moving forward. We listen, learn, improve and grow — together.
