We were seriously swooning!
Such a simple supper and just next level.
Food Lovers herbed ready to roast veg, roasted in the morning and oven reheated early evening.
On a base of Woolies washed baby spinach (so good!).
Crumbled over Indezi River garlic and herb goats log (also from Food Lovers).
A drizzle of homemade garlic oil.
And a sprinkle of sliced green spring onion for extra zing.
Heaven!

I came across this idea for asian-style marinated avo on Instagram, and thought it was genius for doing supper prep in advance.
I was also testing those cheat dumplings, where you squash seasoned chicken mince onto rice paper circles, fold over and fry in a pan.
Well, neither will be repeated!
Although my daughter cleverly suggested using a double layer of rice paper for better support, we found the “dumplings” underwhelming.
They might have been tastier had I used chicken sausage meat, or added a whole lot more seasoning goodies to the mince.
But really not worth the effort.

The marinated avo was convenient, as it was sliced and marinated in the morning, and left all ready to use in the fridge.
But, the soy sauce does make the avo look a little brown, which didn’t appeal.
So I might try this again with white balsamic vinegar, grated garlic, herb salt and water instead … perhaps with some chili flakes?

A quick and easy, but seemingly “gourmet” holiday lunch.
Cheating all the way 😜.
Assisted by a mishmash of helpful stuff from different grocery stores!
The prawns were from Woolies, their raw frozen ones.
I just salt-brined enough for two of us. Then dried them well, and marinated them briefly in Woolies’ Everything Onion and Chili Paste (which is SO handy to have in your fridge).
Also sliced up one shallot and a few mini peppers I had left, and tossed them in some olive oil, salt and chili flakes, ready to saute.

The base was a sachet of ancient grains from Checkers’ Simple Truth range. Ready in 90 seconds! Chewy and satisfying.
Stirred in a jar of Spar Signature range coriander and jalapeno pesto.
Added in half a packet of Woolies beautiful pre-washed baby spinach leaves.

While I was doing that, hubby braaied the prawns and sauteed the veggies, which then got added straight onto the grain base.
Lots of chopped coriander and a cubed avo on top.
And coriander yoghurt on the side at the table.
With a glass of Cederberg Chenin.
Yum.
PS. I am so grateful that we all eat coriander in all its forms. Gives me so much more to play with in the kitchen!

Pre-theatre Thava prawn curry at Thava Montecasino.
Pleasant wine by the glass options.
Perfect portion size, so we didn’t end up with leftovers.
Hubby loved his butter chicken too.
Just a question …
Why do Indian curries have no green veggies in sight??
If I had made these curries at home, I would have added curry leaves, baby spinach, petit pois peas, edamame, and maybe even some pepper strips. And definitely tons of chopped coriander leaves.
PS I did order a kachumber salad to eat first, but it didn’t arrive.

Fabulous lunch at Sleepers in Hoedspruit.
Chicken espetada, with Sleepers peri peri.
Tender and tasty.
Side salad and good chips.
Handled perfectly by Life from Stone 2025.
And then … BANANA crumble.
Genius!!
Better than apple crumble, definitely.
Perhaps whipped cream rather than ice cream with it, next time?
PS awesome how the restaurant floor vibrates when a train passes through the station!

One pack of espetada from Food Lovers, for R49, contains two skewers, each with 3 deboned, skin-on thighs. So 6 thighs in total for R49. Three protein meals for R49!
A good size, much bigger than the Woolies deboned thighs.
I take all six off the skewers, and marinate both sides of each thigh with dry rubs.
I then pack them in pairs, ready for one-person suppers.
One just needs to thaw one packet in the fridge all day, and that evening pop on the braai or a pan, and serve with salad/veg and potatoes.
So my young adults have to make their own supper, but do I make it easy for them, or not 🤪?!

Lunch with a view!
What a view and what a meal!
Pablo dos Manos at Pablo House in Melville.
Every starter and every main we had was superb.
Highlights for me were the halloumi starter and the peri peri prawn pasta with homemade linguini, and my son said he thinks they make the best burger in Joburg!
Great winelist.
Interesting cocktails.
Desserts perhaps not their strength, but the don pedros were good!
Waitress Gugu looked after us very well.
I can’t wait to return.
Perhaps my only criticism is the single bathroom for a whole restaurant of guests 🤪.

Simple Truth’s new veg pasta.
R45 per bag, feeds two more than generously.
Made from sweet potato and cauliflower, but does not taste like cauliflower, like many of the orher low carb noodles.
I would buy this again!
My tummy feels much lighter than it does after normal pasta.
I dont agree with their cooking instructions though.
They say 5-8 minutes, but I think 4 would be sufficient.
Although very low carb, and little junk, the pasta is very low protein, so best served with bolognaise!
My sauce was sauteed red pepper, brinjal and red onion, with a small jar of red pepper pesto from PnP.
A bed of baby spinach under the hot pasta.
Topped with cherry tomato wedges, chopped parsley, and grated pecorino.
Sliced red chili in oil added at the table.

And the smear board leftovers, for breakfast the next day, on sourdough toast!
