THE POWER OF THE CIRCLE IN ARCHITECTURE

While I pride myself on not having a distinctly recognisable “look” that defines my architectural style, I have made extensive use of the circular form in many of the buildings and structures I have designed both on plan and in 3D form.

The circle is a universal symbol with extensive meaning; it represents the notions of totality, wholeness, focus, infinity, unity, timelessness, the sun, the moon - basically the entire universe.

More practically, circles provide a sense of seamless simplicity from dynamic flow of people on a plan to soft flowing form. It is amazing how a round roof simply gets absorbed into nature, and at the same time, can be an intensely powerful graphic element in a more modern contemporary setting.

As beautiful and pure as the circular form is, it remains an intricate shape to build and accommodate furniture. So, the application of the circular form must be practical as it is creative.

GOING OLD-SCHOOL WITH PENCIL SKETCHES

All good designs start with the familiar clutch, a soft lead pencil and a clear, open mind. Call me old-school, but I simply cannot find the freedom on computer systems as they create shortcuts that inhibit a human's creative response to the site's natural features.

My designs start with simple freehand sketches and generally include sinuous flowing lines that are impossible on a drawing board or CAD.

While it creates some challenges for the contractor, it certainly does lead to original and unique design solutions.

BEACH ARCHITECTURE @ INTERSECT ARCHITECTS

Intersect Architects has had the privilege of designing beach homes in Angola, Mozambique, Sandbaai, Hermanus and Strand.

The character and design process of beach houses are entirely different from game lodges. The views and openness to the outside are much less guarded, with access to ocean scenes and sea breezes the priority.

The beach lodge in The Sanctuary, Vilanculos, has the most spectacular mix of views from every villa and the most fantastic entertainment area.

All doors and shutters were hand-made and carved in Vilanculos and then aged and distressed. The East Coast Africa overtones set an exotic ambiance to enjoy the most spectacular sunset across a 120-meter jetty.

INTERSECT ARCHITECT'S CURRENT WORK IN PROGRESS:
A modern lodge on the Limpopo River

Intersect Architects is proud to announce that we are in the process of completing a new contemporary lodge situated on the banks of the mighty Limpopo River.

We opted for simple modern shapes with exposed brickwork, off shutter concrete and curved metal sheeting roofs.

The rim-flow swimming pool has dramatic views of the majestic river with views up and down the river course.

Furniture is on-site and ready to install, with more photos to follow in a month or so.

THE HISTORY OF INTERSECT ARCHITECTS:

Intersect Architects started 26 years ago due to a competition held for the Limpopo Legislature. Intersect was set up to handle the design and documentation of this One Billion Rand Project.

Since then, Intersect Architects has developed a reputation as a small boutique practice for bold and original design in the domestic and commercial lodge markets.

We also developed an interior design practice and have successfully completed several lodges and home interiors.

We look forward to the challenges and the opportunities those challenges being in a new exciting future of Architecture and Design.

GREEN/ECO-ARCHITECTURE

The concept of Green or Eco-Architecture is often misunderstood to believe that it only involves generating electricity and saving water. While these are extremely important, it involves so much more than that.

Buildings should be passively designed to reduce the energy required to heat and cool the building by orientating the building correctly and allowing for natural cross ventilation and the sustainable use of recycled materials, the impact on the building footprint when the home is built.

Often complicated hi-tech systems are impractical gimmicks. The respectful restoration of old buildings and reclaimed materials saves money and adds a unique aspect to the building. At Bramasole Guest House, we made use of discarded parquet flooring on the walls, and the laminated glass in the stairs is from ABSA Bank.

Intersect Architects does not shy away from restoring and renovating old buildings. We are incredibly proud of our track record in this regard.
