Happy Women’s Day to all ladies out there. Because someone has to make the sandwiches!

Only joking. Obviously.

Truth is, most of what actually holds the world together runs through women who rarely get named for it. The ones keeping a family steady, a business steady, a room steady, while everyone else takes credit for being calm.

I see it every day in my wife Juanita. She is the anchor. Not in the soft, decorative way people mean when they say that. In the real sense, the one who holds things steady while I chase the next idea, who makes a house feel like a home, who makes everything genuinely better just by her being in it.

So happy Women’s Day, properly this time. To the women who carry more than they’re ever given credit for, and to mine specifically, who makes my life better in every way that counts.

Nita does make a mean sandwich though...

Simple lines. No overcomplicated design.

A wardrobe wall in soft neutral tones, a dressing nook with a fluted timber backdrop, a mirror that doesn't try too hard. Nothing here is chasing a trend, which is exactly why it'll still look right in ten years.

A bathroom that works before it impresses.

Herringbone tile on one wall, textured plaster on the rest, a walk-in shower with a black steel screen instead of a full enclosure. Nothing decorative for its own sake, every surface and fitting earning its place. That's the whole brief in one line: keep it simple, keep it functional, let it work.

Not every room needs four walls to earn its keep.

This is a passage, widened just enough to hold a proper desk, storage, and open shelving without ever feeling like a corridor doing double duty. The trick isn't adding more, it's restraint. Simple lines, one materials palette, nothing fighting for attention.

Sometimes the best design decision is knowing when to stop.

The guest loo doesn't have to play by the same rules as the rest of the house. This one didn't.

That mirror is the whole personality of the room, a half circle traced in black steel, backlit so the light seems to come from behind the wall itself. Paired with a matte black sink and a wall-hung toilet in the same black, the whole space reads as one confident, contrasting idea.

Sometimes the smallest room in the house is the one you get to have the most fun with.

The PJ lounge. No agenda beyond being together.

That timber ledge running along the back of the sofa isn't just a design flourish, it's a wraparound bar. Drinks, snacks, remotes, all within arm's reach without anyone having to leave the couch. Built for the nights nobody wants to end.

And yes, that's a wall of pug portraits. Some homes need a splash lamp. This one needed a whole gallery.

A kitchen built for a full house, not a photo shoot.

This island does the heavy lifting. Two cooks can work it at once without getting in each other's way, and the induction hob is hidden under the counter when it's not in use, so the whole surface turns into extra prep and serving space in seconds.

Add the seating along one side and you've got a kitchen that holds the whole family at once, cooking, eating, talking, all in the same breath.

Lost an entire Monday to a bunch of Sonoff switches that randomly stopped working on WiFi. They worked, then they didn't. A full day chasing pairing that wouldn't take and error messages that flat-out lied about what was wrong. Never found the real cause — it just started working again. It was not a fun Monday...

Honest take after that: Sonoff is cheap, it's a solid entry into home automation, but budget for hiccups — pairing can cost hours, and any future reset is billable time.

Also worth knowing: WiFi/Bluetooth gear legally needs ICASA + NRCS approval in SA, and grey-market imports often aren't covered — goes for every brand, not just Sonoff.

Shelly is where the real smooth experience starts imo — clean local setup, no cloud drama. My actual minimum for a client: Shelly (or Hue/KNX/Rako/Lutron) + HD Anywhere as the control layer, so everything runs under one platform instead of four separate apps. Want zero compromises: go full Crestron.

Cheap gear is never free — you're just paying with time and frustration instead of money.

Open the door. Everything's exactly where your hand expects it to be.

No digging for the coffee jar. No shuffling things aside for the flour. Just clean rows, good light, and a hidden wine nook in reclaimed brick.

This is what a pantry should feel like.

This is a built-in dressing room, still in draft design. We're playing with various ideas.

One side already has cupboards that work well, so we're possibly keeping those with small adjustments and building to match. The other side is a full new build. Or a second option is both sides get new cupboards.

The bit worth showing is the choice we give the client. Different configurations, some with the mirror and light features built in, some without, shown in both a warm wood tone and a darker tone. Same footprint, same brief, several different ways to actually use the space.

That's the part people don't always realise is part of the process. You don't just get a rendering. You get to see the actual options and choose what fits how you live, not just how it looks.

Excited to see what the client goes for, and to showcase the final solution.
