Tonic Design

Tonic Design Iconic furniture editions and interior programs for residential, retail, hospitality and corporate spaces.

We are an interior-architectural design studio specializing in custom and limited edition product and furniture, as well as showcasing of selected range of imported product and contemporary fine art pieces. A fascination with the design of furniture forms the core of what we do. The modern sophistication of our work is the result of an unorthodox approach towards materials, an emphasis on technical precision and a return to traditional construction techniques and refined craftsmanship.

HEX: A new collection of geometric timber tables

—

Made entirely from exceptionally hard-wearing, solid French oak, the HEX dining, coffee and side table offer a warm, fine grain finish with a distinctive character brought about by the natural knots and mineral streaking unique to each piece. To offset this patina, we’ve designed the range with a clear emphasis on geometric precision and hard edge profiles, creating strong, simple contours that present beautifully in light and shadow.

Now on preview for .capetown at our Kloof Street showroom.

The final day of Ari’s Listening Room in Cape Town – a three-day series curated by Andile Buka in association with Bang & Olufsen .southafrica and Krone .world

*Today’s Listening Experience*

Lindokuhle Nkosi (Spinnie Ripperton): 11:00–13:00

Lindokuhle Nkosi is a South African writer and interdisciplinary practitioner whose textual interventions often extend beyond the page, merging with installation and performance to explore the spatial, material, and performative dimensions of language. The Founding Editor of the first dedicated arts pages on South Africa’s largest mainstream news platform, Nkosi has contributed to a wide range of local and international publications. Her expansive body of work and curatorial practice — traversing journalistic, reflective, and experimental modes of writing – is marked by a sensitivity to texture, both linguistic and material, and an engagement with lived realities.

“Poetry, first of all, was and still must be a musical form. It is speech musicked.” – Amiri Baraka

This session listens for the places where lyric meets rhythm, where the beat completes the sentence, where voice becomes drum. It celebrates the songwriter as theorist and conjurer – the one who translates emotion into metre, who turns memory into melody, who understands that composition is also cosmology.

*LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE*. Register to attend the session by navigating to Ari’s Listening Room via the link in our bio.

*Today’s Listening Experience*
Athenkosi “Athi Maq” Maqubela: 15:00–17:00

Athenkosi “Athi Maq” Maqubela is a Cape Town–based Landscape Architecture researcher and DJ. She has hosted a number of concept-driven radio shows exploring sound, culture, and environment – including GMF (A11 Agency, 2020), a gentle pandemic-era series featuring artists in conversation and uplifting mixes; Aspects (Hamshack Radio, 2021–2022), where guests reflected on urban ecology through jazz and liberation-focused soundscapes; and Ingoma (Other Radio, 2023–2024), which traced underground and historical music lineages across regions and eras through archival storytelling and deep listening. Athi Maq will guide a listening session bridging cool-jazz clarity and cosmic exploration – uncovering the spirit of improvisation, atmosphere, and social reflection, and noting how these astral curiosities echo through the postmodern and networked age of production.

*LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE*. Register to attend the session by navigating to Ari’s Listening Room via the link in our bio.

Rooiboslove: 19:00–21:00

Rooiboslove is a DJ, writer, and curator from Cape Town who has been active as a selector in the city since 2018. He founded Word of Mouth in 2023, an initiative focused on making South African jazz more accessible through events, research, and online content. As a DJ, his sets often feature some of his favourite composers and producers: Abdullah Ibrahim, Thandi Ntuli, Philip Tabane, Nick Drake, and Kaidi Tatham, among others. For Musical Gateways, Rèné reflects on how listening experiences with certain artists can open doors to others – how Kaidi Tatham could prime you for Weather Report, or how exploring Andrew Hill might bring a new appreciation for Nduduzo Makhathini.
