AI is changing the way we design interiors. And I think that’s a good thing.

I use AI in my own design process to explore ideas, test colour schemes, visualise concepts and get to possibilities faster.

But there’s a big difference between generating a beautiful room and designing a room for a real person.

A real design has to consider how you live, how you move through the space, what needs to be stored, what needs to be durable, what fits the budget, what can actually be built — and, ultimately, how you want your home to feel.

AI can give me a starting point.
It can’t interview my client.
It can’t understand their routines.
It can’t make the judgement calls.
It can’t take responsibility for the finished design.

That’s where the designer comes in.
AI creates the image.
The designer creates the solution.

And I think the future of interior design isn't AI versus designers. It’s designers who know how to use these tools intelligently.

ASK THE DESIGNER: Why doesn’t my room look like my Pinterest inspiration?

You’ve saved the images.
You’ve bought the beige sofa.
You’ve found the cushions.
You’ve chosen the accessories.

So why doesn’t your room look like the picture?

Because good interior design isn’t about copying what you see.

It’s about understanding why it works and then translating that into your space.

In this fictional PepperPot design scenario, the starting point was a room with all the “right” pieces — but it still felt flat and disconnected.

The solution wasn’t to replace everything.

It was about:

• getting the scale right
• anchoring the furniture with a larger rug
• adding layers of texture
• introducing contrast and depth
• creating warmth through lighting
• using colour thoughtfully
• editing and styling with intention

And sometimes, one carefully chosen accent colour — like this deep plum — can completely change how a neutral scheme feels.

Pinterest is brilliant for inspiration. But inspiration is only the starting point.

The real question is:

“How do I make this work in my home?”

That’s where design comes in.

Have you ever bought something because it looked amazing online, only to wonder why it didn't work in your own home?

Tell me below.

One of the most common interior design mistakes? Buying beautiful things that don't work together.

A client might have a beautiful sofa, a gorgeous rug, artwork they love and some carefully chosen accessories.

Individually, each piece works.

But when they’re all in the same room, something still feels off.

This is usually because the decisions have been made one purchase at a time, rather than as part of an overall design.

Good interior design isn't simply about finding beautiful furniture and décor. It's about understanding how everything relates to everything else:

• Colour
• Scale and proportion
• Texture
• Materials
• Furniture placement
• Lighting
• Visual balance

You can have a room full of expensive, beautiful pieces and still not have a cohesive space.

Sometimes the answer isn't to buy more.

It's to step back, look at the room as a whole, and work out what is missing, what is competing, and what needs to change.

That is where having a clear design plan can make all the difference.

Your home doesn't need more beautiful things. It needs the right beautiful things, working together.

What can Mars teach us about designing for humans?

If we ever build homes on Mars, interior design will have to solve a very different set of problems.

Space will be limited.
Privacy will matter.
Lighting will become more intentional.
Nature will be scarce.
And a window could become much more than a window.

Every decision would have to consider not just how a space looks, but how it makes people function, feel and live.

And that is what makes the idea interesting to me as an interior designer.

Because strip away the luxury, the trends and the Pinterest-worthy finishes, and you are left with the fundamental question:

What does a human being actually need from their environment?

Perhaps Mars isn't just a thought experiment about the future.

Perhaps it's a reminder that good interior design has never really been about filling a room with beautiful things.

It's about designing a space around the person who has to live in it.

So, if you had to live on Mars for a year, what would be the ONE thing you'd need in your home to feel at home?

I'm curious to see what people choose.

BEFORE → AFTER: When a bathroom is redesigned around how it actually needs to work.

A beautiful bathroom isn’t just about choosing the right tiles, tapware or colour palette.

The original space had plenty of potential, but the layout, lighting, storage and proportions were working against it.

The redesign focuses on:

• Better visual balance
• A more functional vanity
• Improved storage
• A more generous shower experience
• Layered, warmer lighting
• Natural materials and timeless finishes
• A calmer, more cohesive overall feel

The goal isn’t simply to make a room look better.

It’s to make the space work better, feel better and reflect the people who use it.

This is where thoughtful interior design makes the difference: looking beyond the finishes and considering the entire experience of the space.

What would you change first in the original bathroom — the layout, lighting, storage or finishes?

DESIGN TIP TUESDAY | Choose your lighting before your finishes

One of the easiest ways to get an interior design decision wrong is to choose your finishes without considering the lighting.

Paint, stone, timber and fabrics can look completely different depending on:

• The direction of natural light
• The time of day
• The colour temperature of your artificial lighting
• The surrounding colours and materials

My tip: never judge a finish from a tiny sample in a showroom.

Test it in the actual space and look at it throughout the day — then check it again under the lighting you intend to use.

Because the “perfect” paint colour isn't necessarily the one that looks best on the sample card.

It’s the one that looks right in your room, in your light, with your finishes.

That is where good design starts to become considered design.

Moodboard Monday | When colour has a plan

A beautiful room isn't created by simply choosing beautiful things.

It comes from understanding how colour, texture, materials, proportion and contrast need to work together.

This bathroom is a great example.
The warm terracotta brings personality and depth. Soft blush tiles balance it without competing for attention. Sage green introduces a natural element, while light timber adds warmth and keeps the scheme grounded. Matte-black fittings then provide the contrast that gives the whole palette definition.

The individual elements are relatively simple.

The skill is knowing how to bring them together — and when to stop.

This is why I use moodboards as an important part of my design process. They aren't simply a collection of pretty images; they're a way of establishing a clear design direction before committing to finishes, fittings and furnishings.

Because often, the hardest part of a renovation isn't finding things you love.
It's knowing whether they'll work together in your space.

That's where thoughtful interior design makes the difference.
