My studio is located in a beautiful tranquil environment. I’ll take you through hand-building tech It's all about being relaxed and finding your happy place.
In the beginner's class you will learn about preparing your clay, and techniques you can use to make your forms, from pinching to coiling and building with slabs. First, you build with soft clay, the first lesson we normally do two items, nothing too difficult as that comes later. The clay then dries until it's 'leather hard', at which time you can finish by stamping, carving, imprinting, etc. The
items are then left to become bone dry (usually a few days). After that, they are placed in the kiln to be 'bisque' or 'biscuit' fired. At this stage, you can apply your glaze. It is then fired again - this time at the higher final temperature. ABOUT MY CLASS
I usually have two to four students in my class but I'm also running a one-to-one pottery class, but you're always welcome to bring a paying friend or even two along. For more information visit my website:

Ceramic Pottery & Slumped Glass Studio - Johannesburg, South Africa
Pottery for me is a form of meditation; I can get lost for hours creating my designs and listening to relaxing music. The challenge of making something new and inspiring is the driving force behind my work. I love creating something where the end result is totally unknown until the moment the kiln is opened.
I was born in a small town in North Eastern France, on the border with Luxembourg, and came to South Africa while still quite young. After matriculating I worked on a Kibbutz for a year and then spent time in North Africa, Europe, West Africa and finally London for the next thirteen years!!
When our daughter was born we thought it was time to come home to SA.
Arriving with a two-year-old in tow, we found a house and not too long after I started making huge cement pots as I could not find any that I liked. When friends saw my pots they also wanted some, so before I knew it I was in the cement-pot business! After a while the pots were too big and heavy for me to continue so I decided to look at changing to ceramics.... a year of pottery night-classes and then years of trial and error - lots of it – and here I am!!
I love the pieces that I make....if I don’t get a ‘feeling’ off them they get trashed. I want everyone who gets one of my pieces to have that same feeling.
Ceramics and Glass may seem unrelated but both are fired and both have results that are unique to a particular firing - no piece can be replicated in another firing. Just another way to recycle bottles but instead of landing up as another boring bottle a unique piece of art, that has a use, is created.
I love the way glass melts into beauty but, more interestingly, or importantly, I get to enjoy the wine in the bottle with friends and family before changing the wine bottle into art. I use a variety of other bottles too and have many more ideas to explore so come back here often to see my new creations.
