Some terrarium truths we rarely talk about… 🌿

Whether you made your first jar yesterday or have been building terrariums for years, I think we all eventually learn the same little lessons.

1. The first terrarium is rarely the best one.
You spend hours choosing the plants, arranging every stone and carefully placing every piece of moss… and somehow, the terrarium still has other plans.
And that’s okay. We all started somewhere.

2. Sometimes the terrarium you love the most is the one that teaches you the most.
Not every beautiful build survives. Some simply become lessons disguised as failures.

3. More plants don't always mean a better terrarium.
Sometimes we keep adding because an empty space feels wrong… only to realise later that the empty space was exactly what the design needed.

4. We all check for condensation way more often than necessary.
Once in the morning.
Once in the afternoon.
And somehow… one last check before sleeping. 😄

5. A little mold can make you question everything.
You see one tiny white spot and suddenly you're inspecting the entire terrarium like a forensic scientist.

6. Moss teaches patience.
You look at it today.
You look again tomorrow.
And wonder why nothing happened.
Then weeks later, you suddenly notice that it has quietly taken over.

7. Sometimes the smallest plant becomes the star of the entire build.

8. We often worry more about our terrariums than they worry about themselves.
We adjust the light.
Move the jar.
Open the lid.
Close the lid.
Move it again.
And eventually realise… perhaps we should just let it settle.

9. Experienced artists still lose terrariums.
Experience doesn't mean everything survives.
It simply means you learn to observe the signs a little earlier.

10. And perhaps the biggest truth…
A terrarium isn't really a finished artwork.

It changes.
It grows.
It struggles.
Sometimes it surprises you.
Sometimes it disappoints you.

And sometimes, months after you thought you had finally figured it out, it reminds you that nature was never following your design in the first place.

Maybe that's why we keep making them. 🌱

Because we're not just creating little worlds.

We're learning how to listen to them....

🌿 *A useful way to observe your terrarium's water cycle:*
If your terrarium shows very little condensation indoors, you can temporarily place it outdoors in bright natural light, but NEVER direct sunlight, and observe it over several hours (best time is to do this between 8 to 10 in the morning. If condensation appears on the glass, it shows that there is sufficient moisture in the enclosed ecosystem for water vapour to condense when the temperature changes.
However, no condensation does not automatically mean the terrarium is too dry. Condensation depends on temperature, humidity and the temperature of the glass also. Always consider the condition of the plants, moss and substrate as well.

*Understanding Condensation in Your Bottle Garden*
🌿 Don't judge the health of your terrarium by the amount of condensation on the glass.
My own Biki Knysna terrariums live under grow lights and often have very little visible condensation — yet they are exceptionally healthy and growing beautifully.
What matters is the balance of the entire ecosystem, not how wet the glass looks. Water is constantly moving through the little forest: from the soil, into the plants, into the air and back again.
Sometimes the healthiest terrarium is the one that doesn't look wet at all. 💚

You may also notice that your bottle garden produces more condensation when it is outside in natural light than when it is indoors.

Condensation is not a measure of whether your terrarium has enough water. It is simply part of the natural water cycle and is affected by temperature, humidity and the environment around your bottle.

💧 Why does condensation appear?
Your plants take up water from the soil and release some of it into the air through transpiration. This creates water vapour inside your closed bottle.
When the humid air meets cooler glass, the invisible water vapour turns into tiny droplets — condensation.
Outside, natural humidity and the changing temperatures between day and night can make this process much more noticeable.
Indoors (with or without a grow light), the bottle and glass may remain warmer and therefore hold more water vapour without producing visible droplets.
🌱 So, should you be worried if your glass is clear?
No!
Don't water your terrarium simply because you don't see condensation.
Instead, look at the whole little ecosystem:
🌿 Are your plants growing and looking healthy?
🌱 Is the moss green and hydrated?
💧 Is the soil slightly damp rather than bone dry?
🍃 Does everything look fresh and alive?
If the answer is yes, your terrarium is probably doing exactly what it should.

Likewise, lots of condensation isn't necessarily better. Constantly dripping-wet glass can indicate that the ecosystem is holding too much moisture.
🔍 Become a Forest Explorer!
Rather than looking for a particular amount of condensation, observe your bottle garden over time.
Notice what happens in the morning, during the day and at night. Watch how the plants, moss, moisture and tiny creatures interact.
