On the bench... Very, very rare Kienzle automatic world clock. First built in the 1930's with a mechanical movement, this one dates from 1964 and uses Kienzles electromagnetic watch movement. Unfortunately a previous owner left a battery in it, which destroyed the best part of the movement. Looking forward to finding a replacement part.

Currently on the bench. I found this Junghans Vienna regulator out in the wild. Didn't have much hope, but after stripping, cleaning, polishing pivots and bushings and polishing the pendulum it runs like...clockwork. The case is looking rather sad, but with a crown like that, it will have to be fixed! Built circa 1880 and the dial's enamel is flawless.

The mystery clock. This mantel clock dates from the late 19th century and has a very peculiar feature, instead of a pendulum or floating balance, which requires the clock to be precisely level for it to work this one has an enclosed platform escapement. Much like a watch, the clock can move in any direction and still work. The movement is also exceptionally heavy all of which leads us to believe that this clock was used in a ship's cabin. This is a chiming clock that plays Westminster chimes, which I am busy fine tuning. This clock is for sale.

E. Ingraham & Co 'Siren' eight-day striking clock. This is referred to as a 'kitchen clock' and everything, including the glass and paper dial is original. Only one piece of wood trim of the American Oak case was replaced. This clock was made in Bristol, Connecticut circa 1895. My wife may consider selling it.

Ansonia 'Belmont' parlor clock. This model was manufactured between 1894 and 1911. It is an eight-day striking clock featuring a nickel-plated pendulum and I believe it received accolades at the Paris clock exhibition of 1909. Everything, except the glass is original. Someone, somewhere in its history made some holes through the back of the American Oak case, presumably to make the sound travel further. This clock is for sale.

Well, what does one do when you have a lot of time on your hands? Learn some new tricks and get drawn into the fascinating, yet sometimes frustrating, world of mechanical clocks. The world of a hundred or so years ago where clock makers in Germany, England, France and the USA employed thousands of people in their factories to create time machines. Machines that used the power of a wound spring to be harnessed through precision gears and eventually escape through a pendulum or escapement, recording time in the process.

I am not entirely sure that many household appliances produced today would still be around, nevermind working, in 50 - 120 years from now.

These are some clocks I found and resurrected, now looking for new homes.
