Rewild Art Exploring and strengthening our connectedness with the natural environment through fine art.

As part of the

Rewild Art Boutique Gallery we had the honour of hosting Martin Swart on the Feeshuis stoep. Martin demonstrated how to throw a vast array of shapes. From tea pots to prepbowls. He also explained and showed his decoration techniques to capitalise on surfaces that interact with his glazes.

A laid back warm Autumn day, with visitors to the gallery comfortably interacting with the process. It was especially heart warming to see a group of young boys surrounding Martin closely with attentive interest.
(I purposefully did not add music to this reel, so Martin's discussions can be heard)

Martin's work forms part of the group exhibition at Rewild Art Boutique Gallery and will be open for viewing till the 10th of May.

Results from my latest glaze firing.

A large stoneware platter with Cape leopard and Vaal rhebuck tracks.
Dawie and Lizette Burger from Dawie Burger in the Cederberg poured these specific casts for me of a large male leopard. Originally they where used to produce a series of ceramics inspired by the Cederberg that was auctioned off at the launch of Sustainable Ceder. Sustainable Cedar is an NPO that was founder by this dynamic couple and is dedicated to the protection of the critically endangered Clanwilliam Cedar.

I feel that this new clay and glaze combination compliments the specific environment the tracks where found in.

Medium: Stoneware
Fully glazed.
Dimensions : 420 mm x 350 mm x 35 mm

Last week I was cordially invited by Tracy Winde to the Premier's residence at Leeuwenhof, Cape Town.

We were graciously welcomed with generosity of spirit, and a heartwarming approachability, I was perhaps not expecting considering the setting.

Tracy Winde is the founder of HeARTshine. A charity dedicated to addressing trauma in children from under-resourced areas. Teaching them essential coping skills to become active, employable and responsible citizens. This is done through the use of creative arts and mindfulness practices.

With coffee in hand it became quite clear the passion Tracy harbours for this approach to tackling some of South Africa's socio-economic challenges. Having a degree in Performing Arts she values the therapeutic impact art can have in communities. HeARTshine has a Champion program, that identifies and trains young people between the ages of 20-30 in becoming ambassadors for this approach and perpetuating these skills sets amongst the youth in their communities.

The reason for my invitation, to deliver one of my art pieces and have a conversation around art's role in inspiring and empowering the youth.

The art piece in question could be considered my first self-portrait. A mask, some of you might recognise. The title being "A priest of Nerthus".

Art is the embodiment of human experience. In this case an expression of my connection and interaction with femininity. Not only within myself, but my environment.
It is fascinating to see art take on this status as an entity, separate from the artist. Undertaking a journey and finding meaningful interactions with people on its way. The piece came to be in a period where I was processing recent trauma myself. I wonder if somehow this was captured in the sculpture and resonated with Tracy and her team.

A priest of Nerthus will come under the hammer at De Zalze estate, as part of Heartshine's golf day. I am proud to be associated with this charity and wish them great success with the important work they are doing.

Ceramic Boer goat sculptures.

A tribute to a South African icon.

Originating in the Eastern Cape thornveld, this breed is the result of selective breeding between indigenous goats kept by the Khoikhoi and Nguni peoples and European and Indian breeds that came with the settlers. The result is a hardy, fertile and fast growing breed that has become one of the most popular goats across the world. Now found on all five the inhabited continents.

History lesson aside, my personal connection comes from spending time amongst these animals in the Little Karoo, on a dear friends farm. Experiencing their differing personalities, tending to nursing lambs and observing raunchy rams in amusement. Their resilience in the sparse vegetation of South Africa is worthy of admiration. It would be difficult to image our semi desserts without herds of these loveable two tone quadrupeds.

Overberg ceramicists making the trek over the berg to join in the fun at Rondebosch Potters Market each year.

This market is hosted biannually by , one in March and another in November. It has a long history and excellent reputation. With a high standard and very diverse offering.

A wonderful gathering of clay people and clay minded people!

Thanks for all the love at this year's November Rondebosch Potters Market.

Major appreciation for the ceramic community, , friends and customers.
Its always worth the trek from Napier over the berg. Now I have to make a bunch of Boer goats again 😅.

Thanks for the great reel photography.

Title: Boophone
Medium: Stoneware paper clay. Decorated with three glazes and iron oxide. Paired with a bespoke lampshade that represents the plant's inflorescence.
Dimensions: 55.5 cm x 16 cm x 56.5 cm

Currently exhibited as part of the members juried exhibition of in the 6 Spin Street Gallery, Cape Town.

I wanted to represent the Boophone disticha plant in a way that dilates it's other worldly shape and spiritual presence. The Boophone is a plant with immense cultural and archaeological significance in South Africa. It's use dates back millenia. It is one the few plants depicted in rock engravings, historically used in mumification and possible shellfish preservation. With multiple medicinal and spiritual uses in contemporary traditional societies.

My use of three different glazes attempts to not only compliment the ethereal physical qualities of the plant, but also making a connection with how knowledge changes one's perception. The Afrikaans name gifbol is in reference to the high toxicity of this plant and one of its historical uses was as an arrow poison by San hunters. This name together with its other Afrikaans name, Seeroogblom, indicates the demarcation of this plant as a danger. While the relationship of other South African peoples with Boophone disticha is much more complex and diverse.
