Shuttleworth Weaving

Shuttleworth Weaving Shuttleworth Weaving is a family business. We create a range of unique, handwoven, rugs and throws in wool, mohair and poly-propylene.

Our showroom in Nottingham Road is open 8.30 - 4.30 Monday to Saturday. Shuttleworth Weaving is a family business that creates a range of unique, handwoven standard and bespoke products, eg: hand-crafted rugs, throws and wearables. Our thorough and professional approach to the design and hand-weaving processes has appeal both locally (South Africa) and around the world. Our looms allow us to creat

e fabrics from as narrow as 500 mm and we also create large-format custom rugs of up to nine metres. We are proud of our Hand Woven Heritage and approach. We are not a mass manufacturer but rather skilled crafters who take pride in creating items that become Family Heirlooms. Every product is made by hand, in the traditional way.

Shuttleworth Weaving started in the 1980s.

Andy Shuttleworth remembers, "we got the hell in with formal employment. I was especially tired of wearing a safari suit. We decided to buy somewhere to live that was far enough away from town that we couldn’t commute”. That’s how they landed up in Fort Nottingham living in a caravan beneath the forest and earning their isiZulu name ‘amathendweni’- the tent people.

Helen and Andy quickly earned a reputation for exceptional quality handwoven cushions and carpets, never wavering from their intention to create original craft from the best materials available. Today, internationally renowned Shuttleworth Weaving epitomises the spirit of true craftmanship, voluntary simplicity, authenticity and ethical living.

Do you remember visiting Andy and Helen back in the days when this photo was taken?

You are in love.

The quirky, locally designed fabric in funky greens and off beat reds is perfect from your new decorating project.

Your imagination runs wild, but it is proving impossible to find accessories to match these extraordinary colours.

Fortunately, Shuttleworth Weaving bespoke carpets, hand dyed in the specific colours that you desire, is the answer. Chartreuse, claret, cement, cinnamon or cardamom? Prune, primrose, turquoise or tungsten?

Dye master, Julia Shuttleworth loves playing with paint charts and mixing colours in enormous dye pots in the hills of KwaZulu-Natal. "The challenge of getting colours just right is a thrill," she shares, “especially bright colours that are fun to work with.”

What colour are you dreaming of?

Winter days in the summer rainfall region of South Africa are perfect for soaking up the sun. Our hardwearing, easy-to-wash, polypropylene rugs are ideal for your favourite outdoor space.

Polypropolene is plastic waste that would otherwise be used in industrial processes or turned into ‘nurdles’ by recyclers. The metamorphosis of seemingly useless materials into tactile works of art is testament to the mindful, creative process that is important to us.

Our rugs come in a wide range of calm, on-trend colours – taupe, cream and grey. Not only do they feel good to walk and lie on, but these rugs are resistant to stains, damage from humidity, easy to clean, dry quickly, making them ideal long-lasting solutions for patios, decks and high-traffic areas of your home, office or resort.

This little fellow almost relocated to Cape Town,  but when he heard the property prices decided to stay in the Midlands!

We are shipping handcrafted carpets to a luxury development at the V&A Waterfront.  We found him snuggled into the pile as we were about to send them.

We are inspired by our landscape.

Currently, Leonotis leonurus (wild dagga/ utshwala bezinyoni / lions ear) is flowering all across the KwaZulu-Natal grasslands.

We couldn't resist dying some mohair to match. 🧡

Yesterday was lovely. We enjoyed showing people interested in weaving around our studio. It is clear that many people have absolutely no idea of the detail and effort that goes into weaving a carpet by hand. We look forward to hosting another Open Studio day soon.

The shed full of enormous looms and piles of yarn is absolutely intriguing - especially for those who haven't engaged in the weaving process before.

We have enjoyed showing visitors around today.
