What started as a simple hobby in Ilse’s Bredasdorp kitchen in 1993 has blossomed into a cherished family business. Decades later, their vibrant, intricately hand-painted candles and ceramics continue to capture the heart and soul of South Africa. 🇿🇦💛

Every single Kapula piece is meticulously crafted by hand, from beginning to end—making them the perfect fit for our community of passionate makers.

We are proud to introduce an inspiring and deeply talented creator already part of the Pater Crafter family! 🎨✨

Pater Crafter proudly welcomes Mike Philippides! Mike is a South African painter of Cypriot-Greek heritage based right here in the Western Cape. Although he is a qualified pharmacist who has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for more than 40 years, his artistic journey began as a self-taught doodler drawing and painting mandalas in 2016. Since then, painting has evolved into an ongoing process of learning and discovery through line, form, pattern, colour, texture, and mood.

Shortly after the pandemic, during a holiday in Crete, Greece, he was introduced to a special technique of painting on porcelain and ceramic plates. He instantly fell in love with this unique medium, and plates quickly became his favourite canvases! His subject matter and styles are wonderfully varied, driven by an intuitive and organic creative process. Drawing inspiration from everyday characters, objects, pictures, and scenes, he allows each piece to develop naturally in response to whatever captures his attention. In his own words: "I am a self-taught doodler and, for now, I paint whatever moves me."

Pater Crafter proudly welcomes Die Yster Aap, featuring the incredible iron creations of Michiel Vollgraaf! At 34 years old, Michiel started his career as a boilermaker and later became the owner of his own mechanic workshop. In 2023, his life changed when a motorbike accident left him with injuries, including a brachial plexus injury that limited his arm's function, requiring intensive rehabilitation.

Though he had never worked as an artist before, Michiel discovered a powerful way to express his feelings, find peace, and clear his mind through working with metal and scrap. Embracing pareidolia—the psychological tendency to perceive familiar shapes, patterns, or faces in random data—he began seeing new life and humor in old, unwanted pieces of metal collected over the years, turning them into creative and meaningful works of art that became an essential part of his recovery.

As a fun fact from the workshop: while gravity holds the planet together, the man-made world relies heavily on fasteners like bolts, screws, rivets, and welds. In fact, the industrial bolts market alone is valued at well over $50 billion annually to keep our physical world functioning smoothly!
