We found this puff adder next to my dogs' house. After a lot of huffing and puffing we managed to get it into this bucket and release it into the Baakens valley. 🐍

As of my previous post last week, here are images of what it currently looks like. I have created an open braai area using logs and stones as my chairs. The area for the fire is surrounded by stones and sand so as not to cause any spread. Along side my wall there are pieces of of wood which are my fire-starters. All in all, a prefect outdoor area which keeps my friends comfortable and warm.

From lawn, to lunch and back. I am a big advocate for veggie gardens replacing lawns but sometimes a nice little grass patch in the garden is exactly what is needed. Permaculture teaches us that every element must have more than one function. So what possible functions could a grass patch have? In my garden and mind I think recreation and relaxation are great functions to have in the garden. Some other more subtle design features include a sunken area to catch rain and runoff water then store it in the landscape. Seats built into the retaining walls and a wind brake in its early years. To conclude, plan well and save yourself a lot of work.

My young Sneezewoods have been blessed by some fungi already. These two trees had a rough start in life. Being planted in inhospitable rocky ground just before the drought and then being hacked down by some ill informed person. These are incredible trees that are indigenous to South Africa. The colonists used most of them for timber and fencing. The wood is so hard that it was said they used to make keys from them too. Hence its name Sneezewood makes you sneeze and was also used medicinally for thousands of years by the locals to treat some respiratory illnesses

If I remember correctly it think Spekboom and Jade trees were some of the first things I planted in my garden. Since then I have discovered that they make excellent bonsai material, among loads of other things. Now I'm experimenting for the firstish time with them again.

The southwest side of IDen, until recently has been an impassable mess of stone and other building rubble. Now it has a path and steps and most importantly trees and other indigenous plants. This spot has a long way to go still so watch the space.

A key part to any ecosystem are the trees. Apart from being tremendously beautiful and intelligent organisms, they build soil, give us clean air, shade, shelter, food, medicine and so much more.
When's the best time to plant a tree? The answer is 10 years ago I'm afraid, but the next best time is right now.
