Biggest challenge for me as a ceramic artist!
When I was approached to do this huge project. I agreed without giving it much thought.

A ceramic tile mural for a 5m x 2m outdoor wall.
The fact that they wanted a marine theme excited me. Ive done a range called "Ocean Series" that was personal and I fell inlove with.
The theme of my ocean Series based on a quote from a book named Jonathan livingstone sesgul by Richard Bach
" Don't believe what your eyes see. They only show limitations"

That's how I felt every time I stood on our deck, that looks out over the ocean.
My eyes see what they see. But underneath the surface is an entire unknown unseen and unexplored world.

I never imagined that this project would take 6 months.
That there were no practical "How to" tips or advise from anyone or anywhere.
I could not find similar tile murals for what I had in mind.

Most tile mural images I researched were either individually painted or painted in Delft blue patterns.

A few ceramic artists I approached for advise responded either:
Sorry can't help.
Did a tile mural once, never again.

I was completely out my comfortzone....

This is just a few images of my months' long journey....
I had to stack 180 tiles on my deck at home. Since each panel of 1m x1.8m was painted individually.
(Space limited obviously)

Watch this space to see the final outcome of 2 firings.
Hardening of underglaze at 1800 degrees
Glaze firing at 1200 degrees (so it get that glassy outcome)
And then to go to Knysna for the installation!

Ceramic tile mural.
5 meters! Sunday afternoon. Lining up the tile panels on our deck over looking Maitlands mouth. 180 ceramic tiles...
Checking the dimensions and colours and dotting the odds and ends!
It's been a 5 month love/hate relationship.

This is how I roll on Sunday Afternoons...busy with huge Tile mural. This is one of the four tile panels. 1m x 1.8m. To say I am out my comfortzone is an understatement!
