19 years old. Studying Fine Arts at Port Elizabeth Technicon. Thought I knew everything!

"When you look in the mirror
In total surprise at the hair on your shoulders
And the age in your eyes" **

I remember a time
when things were easy to fix
like my cupiedoll
I had as a child.
much loved
often dropped
and when arms broke off
sent to Durban for repairs
came back
good as new
till the next fall
I remember
playing grown-up
with my sister
making castles in the sand
big enough
for our fairytales
easily erased
when the tides came in
fun happened
between breakfast
and bedtime
spoilt by rules
made by aliens
known as parents
I wonder why after many
ticks and some tocks
Im still starstruck
by the comfort of
now
I wonder why
I forget
to remember
that history
Is a just a story
everyone remembers
differently
that the thoughts
are only words
made up of letters
clamouring for attention:
When negative
seldom listened to
When positive
rarely remembered
I wonder why
I forget
that history
is a just a story
everyone remembers
differently

The epiphany that
Life is a gift
for me
or maybe you
my dear
might come
too little
too late
if at all....

(A day is not wasted
If a memory is made)

I Africa

This land is for you….

See the criss-cross gravel high ways
gangly spokes of a wagon wheels
My wrinkles are permanently crazed
Under the crack of a thousand heels

I am thirsty my rivers never sated
A crook of an elbow is you need
For the fruits of your labour
The grain and the seed

My mornings are oceans of salt and sea
With oysters for breakfast or fish for tea
Bring on your ships my fare is for free
Be sparing, be gentle and leave some for me

The wind might blow on a tedious day
Over the fountains and cobbles and homes made of clay
In alleys might linger a wee bit longer
Where the smell of fires cook a bit stronger

Echo my voice like eons before
Thousands have heard millions galore:
Take great care to save the residue
Although not forever, this land is for you.
