24/09/2015

Before 1995, on this day 24 September. The day was firstly named as Shaka Day, in commemoration of the legendary King Shaka Zulu. After a parliamentary process lobbying the name to be changed, the day became a public holiday known as heritage day. In 2005, a media campaign sought to 're-brand' the holiday as National braai day. In 2007 Archbishop Desmond Tutu affirmed this new title to be a unifying force in a divided country and at the end of 2007 National braai Day changed its name to Braai4Heritage with the endorsement of South Africa's National Heritage Council (NHC). However, regardless of which ever the name you prefer, today is a day to celebrate the diverse beliefs and cultural heritage of this nation, by celebrating the contribution of all South Africans to the building of the new South Africa. Enjoy your heritage celebration holiday :)
