One of our favourite species is Buddleja, this is Buddleja Salvifolia, that flowers prolifically early spring. Absolutely loved by butterflies and types of bees and also very drought tolerant. It grows into a relatively large shrub.

2026 October Soil Health
Start by tilling your garden as last year's many rain compacted your soil and washed a lot of nutrients away. (other years zero/light tilling to preserve microbial life.) Then every year the following:
1. Compost is your best friend. (ANY compost will help, even the cheapest) I usually love Turfvlei Freerange Farm's compost. Just apply on top, no need to work it in.
2. Mulch with straw (Available at Potch Veevoere or Dieuflow Organics or Woodchips.

(IF POSSIBLE)
2a. Put earthworm castings in garden.
2b. Buy BLACKSTRAP Molasses (Dischem) and dissolve 2 Tablespoons in 5L water and water your garden with it or use it with a handheld sprayer like the ones from Guanoboost.
2c. Spray/apply any fish emulsion like Seagro or Multikelp.

Avoid Synthetic/chemical fertilizers where possible. (Imagine washing your face with salt water every day....you will have to invest in a good moisturizer, in other words, the more chemical fertilizers(Salts) you use, the more water your plants will need and want and we never know if this El Nino weather is bringing droughts this year.)

LOW Maintenance gardens are what we want.

The Garden of Eden School teaches us valuable lessons.

Peach pruning
1. Peaches bear fruit on 6month old branches.
2. When your branches are light green and bends very easily, cut it off, it is not strong enough to hold the fruit.
3. Cut all branches that cross each other to obtain good airflow and sunlight.
4. Cutting above the node stimulates growth, cutting below the node stimulates fruit forming.

A local couple has been sentenced for illegally harvesting and selling threatened succulent species on Facebook Marketplace.

André du Preez and Maria van Meyeren of Oudtshoorn North were sentenced on 18 May 2026 in the Oudtshoorn Magistrate’s Court.

They received a fine of R200,000 or 10 years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, after being convicted on five charges relating to the unlawful harvesting and sale of protected plants.

The couple was arrested on 30 May 2025 during a joint operation by the Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit (STU) from Worcester and Oudtshoorn, together with the Wildlife Crime Information Network (WCIN).

More than 400 threatened succulents, valued at approximately R189,500, were seized.

The plants included protected species such as Conophytum truncatum and Haworthia truncata, which had been poached from the Oudtshoorn area.

The convictions were secured under the Nature and Environmental Conservation Ordinance (No. 19 of 1974).

Leon Rossouw of the Wildlife Crime Information Network welcomed the sentence, saying it sends a strong message that plant poaching is a serious criminal offence.

“The rise of online marketplaces and social media platforms has unfortunately made it easier for illegally harvested plants to be advertised and sold,” Rossouw said.

“What may appear to be a harmless hobby or collector’s purchase often fuels a chain of environmental crime that begins with the destruction of wild populations.”

Authorities say the illegal trade in succulents continues because the financial rewards often outweigh the perceived risks.

This case highlights growing efforts by law enforcement to crack down on biodiversity crimes, particularly those facilitated through social media platforms.
