Why the Transition theme?

Every transformation begins with something small.

A butterfly starts its journey as a tiny egg, seemingly ordinary and unremarkable. Yet within it lies the promise of something extraordinary. In much the same way, every quilt begins as simple pieces of fabric—scraps, colours, patterns, and textures waiting to be brought together with purpose and imagination.

As the butterfly grows through each stage of its life, so too does a quilt evolve through the creative process. Ideas are gathered and nurtured. Fabrics are selected. Designs emerge and change. Stitches slowly connect individual pieces into a unified whole. There are moments of experimentation, reflection, and discovery. Then, almost magically, a collection of separate elements is transformed into a work of art.

Transition celebrates this journey of transformation. It honours the creative process that turns fabric into storytelling, colour into emotion, and stitches into lasting legacy. Each quilt reflects a unique journey from inspiration to completion, revealing the beauty that can emerge through patience, skill, and vision.

Transition is also about the art of growing into the best version of yourself. It speaks to the individual journeys of us as quilters. Every quilter begins somewhere—with a first stitch, a first project, and a willingness to learn. Over time, techniques are mastered, confidence grows, and artistic voices or a niche develops. Styles evolve, new challenges are embraced, and creativity flourishes in unexpected ways. Like the butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, quilters continually discover new possibilities within themselves and their creative spirit.

The theme of Transition at the National Quilt Festival 2028 invites participants to reflect on and celebrate the changes that have shaped them. Whether expressed through personal experiences, artistic growth, cultural stories, or the evolution of quilting skills, each quilt becomes a testament to transformation and the beauty found in the journey.

In a world that is constantly changing, quilting reminds us that change is not something to be feared but embraced. Every piece of fabric, every stitch, and every creative decision contribute to a story of becoming something extraordinary - one of imagination, growth and resilience. Through creativity, craftsmanship, and vision, we celebrate not only what we create, but who we become along the way.
